String parsing in BIRT reports [message #1761301]

I have a string and would like to select only the text which is enclosed in [] at the beginning and replace anything which is in [] in between or anywhere in the string with blank.

Example string1:
[ABC] HELLO WORLD [xyz] This is new
expected o/p
-----------------
[ABC]

Example string2:
HELLO WORLD [xyz] This is new

expected o/p
-----------------
