Most likely this file, interpreted as UTF, has characters that your OS can't render. If you delete the character, and replace it with space, does that look okay? If you open this in some other system editor, what does it show? E.g., I'd open it with notepad and see what that looks like. Or try to copy the character and paste it somewhere else and see what that looks like.
