Hello everybody !

Here is my last new questions :

I have to share the work I did with some people that don't know anything about neither UML nor SysML, and they won't install Papyrus to read my files...

How can I export my model from Papyrus to a text document for exemple ?
Is there a way to do it automatically, or should I use a "copy/paste" way ?

Then, I would appreciate any advice about a way to simply present a UML or SysML model to someone that doesn't speak the language and has to give an advice on the work that have been done. The first problem I would see is about the links beetween two diagrams : as an exemple, I really wonder how I could show the links between an IBD and the flow specifications concerning this IBD.

Hi

You could write model transformations to present the material in a form
acceptable to your audience.

However that is dodging the issue.

There are many kinds of UML diagrams; most very off putting to a broad
audience.

You should probably put considerable editorial effort into providing
overview diagrams that demonstrate the principles of what you are doing.
Eliminate all the extraneous clutter.

You therefore present helpful pictures to your users avoiding all
mention of UML. With SysML you may even be able to play icon games so
that it doesn't even look like UML. Just helpful diagrams. Everyone
likes good overview diagrams.

Hi Quentin,

Ed has made an excellent suggestion in his message, above: when presenting to non-technical people who are not familiar with UML or a SysML, you are always better to provide them with representation that matches their understanding of the system.

I would suggest you read up on the CSS capabilities of Papyrus to help you in defining and applying more interesting icons to your model. That way, you could selectively apply a CSS stylesheet depending on the desired representation. An additional profile could also help, but it may be too heavy a solution for you.

Thanks very much for your ideas.
One more question.

Is there a way to "publish" the work I did ?
Because until now, I didn't find how to show my diagrams without Papyrus.
And none of my relatives on the project use Papyrus. Even those who understand and like UML/SysML descriptions.

Hi Quentin,

If you right-click on a diagram background, you can then select "File -> Save as Image File" to output an image of your diagram. You can then include those images in documents and presentations, and of course to show others.

You could also have a look at the Eclipse GenDoc project (https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/modeling.gendoc), which has released a version 0.5.0 on March 4. Note that I have not used it yet, so I can not say anything more than its existence at this point (although it is on my list of things to do...).

I also found a way this afternoon. In File (on the right, top of the log), there is an "export" fonction and when you selected your project, you can export all the diagrams with one clic.
It makes the same that you explained, but for all diagrams.

However, the exports really don't look nice.
The IBD are cut, the colours don't always appears and the requirement diagrams and some BDD are "broken"
(They don't appears as I arranged them, or they appears with some bugs...)

Is there a way to correct that ?
(And I observed that some formats are totally broken..)

Hi Quentin!

I use the Save as Image File... function available from the diagram context menu, and save each diagram as a .png, which I then put into a Word or Visio file for presentation. Working this way it's a bit easier to maintain a revision log, since I only work on a certain part of the model at a time. But I would recommend looking into genDoc (had my eye on that tool for a while, but haven't had the time yet to check it out) if you want to generate a new document each time you update the model. Risk is though, your receivers will have information overload from hundreds of diagrams in a single file...
