where do you linux eclipse users put eclipse?

Personally, I would prefer to put one copy in a central location, such
as /opt/eclipse, and then have each user put their workspace in
/home/username/workspace

I am wondering if there are any downsides to doing this, or should each
user have their own copy of eclipse?

Although I haven't installed Eclipse on Linux I have done so for Netbeans,
Poseidon and many other tools and applications. In the old days I would
also put Thunderbird and Firefox in there, but they are up to date enough
in the packaged form of most distro's now that I don't bother.

I always put these in /opt with /opt mounted from a separate partition so
that when I upgrade I don't have to reinstall all the apps.

I also then put symbollic link in /usr/bin, that way all users can either
run from a console or they can create shortcut using the global command.

Can't see any downside.

Take a look at this help page:

http://help.eclipse.org/help33/topic/org.eclipse.platform.do c.isv/reference/misc/multi_user_installs.html

It explains some concepts and is a good starting point for further reading.
