Hi,
I've been playing with WTP1.0M3 on Eclipse 3.1M5 for a couple of weeks
now, and am sometimes experiencing total program hangs/freezes while
attempting to unfold project-type nodes (especially trying to unfold
"Dynamic Web Projects" node) in J2EE Project Explorer view. Looks like
some project(s) in my workspacez is/are somehow corrupt, which causes
Eclipse to freeze completely, and the need to kill it and restart it,
possibly causing more corruption...
Seems to happen at random, but mostly though with new projects I create
with the J2EE Web Project Wizard, and just "toy with" afterwards.
This is really annoying, and I have the uncomfortable impression that the
current version of WTP becomes a bit unstable as soon as you have more
than a couple of Web projects in your workspace...
While working with previous vresions of Eclipse, I have myself grown used
to isolating projects as much as possible by using differnet workspaces,
but htere are still cases when I need to have a couple of Web projects in
a single workspace, plus a couple of other projects (typically: projects
for frameworks used in my web apps, so I can debug source within the
frameworks).
Lastly, I seem to get the same weird messages (reproduced below) each time
Eclipse starts, it is sort of complaining about a missing builder.... Can
anyone provide some explanation about this ??
TIA,
Laurent
_____
Note: I reproduce my last Eclipse log below. For your information, all
projects referenced below are Dynamic Web Projects. "FWKSample" and
"FWKSample2" being "serious" projects, while "testweb_v23" is just a
project I created and toyed with, and "TestWebService1_WebProject" being a
Web services client web project.

You can ignore the LibDirBuilder missing messages, annoying, but harmless (AFAIK).
As for the hangs, we'll be doing more "load" testing eventually, but is really helpful
to get some real life community help as we go. If experencing apparent hangs, its helpful
to us if you follow the following sort of procedure.
When you start WTP, use the -debug -consolelog options so a console window is left open
on desktop as you work with IDE. Set the properties of the window so it "buffers" plenty
of lines (I usually set to several thousand).
Then, when you experience the hang in IDE, go to console window and get a "thread dump"
(by pressing ctrl-break (at least on windows)).
Capture that output in a file (I use select-all/copy/paste, there might be other ways).
wait a 5 or 10 seconds and get another thread dump. Save it to a file too.
Then, attach those thread dumps to a bugzilla, with some general description of what you were
doing. Often (not always) we can spot some problem areas in these dumps and fix the problem
even without being able to reproduce consistently.
Thanks.

Many thanks for the advice about LibDirBuilder missing messages & detailed
procedure for getting debug info... I must confess I was unaware of the
existence of this debug feature, but from now on I will configure my
installation so it always starts in debug mode.

Hi David,
I've just been experiencing the hangs again on a workspace containing a
single Dynamic Web project I've created a couple of days ago (contains
nothing but a trivial index.jsp).
I am using Windows XP SP1 at work behind a proxy. In the Proxy settings
(Preferencs->Internet) I enabled the proxy & authentification, without
filling suername/password so that it prompts me for credentials the first
time it needs to go online.
When I start Eclipse, I go into the J2EE perspective, Project Explorer
view, and unfold the "Dynamic Web projects" node. So far, so good.
But next, I try to unfold the node for my project (called "WebProj1") and
then Eclipse totally freezes, while CPU stays idle.
No particular message in the log file, nor in the log window (I followed
your advice and started Eclipse with -debug -consolelog)
Next, when I activate the console window and try to hit 'Ctrl+Break',
nothing happens. I also tried 'Ctlr+Break' in the Eclipse window, doesn't
do anything either.
The only way out is to kill Eclipse and open it again.
I did find a WORKAROUND and a POSSIBLE EXPLANATION to this problem:
When I open Eclipse again and unfold the Dynamic projects node, if I just
do a left click on the project name and wait a few secs, the Proxy's
authentication window ("Password Required") is suddenly displayed.
Same thing if I just right-click on the project and select "Properties".
This is weird since I turned off all Validation options in
Preferences->validation so there's no reason anyway for Eclipse to try and
go online...
I therefore STRONGLY SUSPECT an issue with the way Eclipse handles
Internet connections and the triggering of the proxy authentication
window...
I know I'm probably assuming a lot, but here's what I suppose is
happening: when I start Eclipse and unfold my Project node, Eclipse wants
to go online for some reason (even though Validation is turned off). For
some other reason, it fails to trigger the Proxy authenticationwindow and
hangs there forever waiting for the connection to be initiated, which
never happens...
For another strange reason, this only happens when unfolding the project
node, it doesn't happen when you just click on the project name and wait.
I haven't had time to install and test 3.1M6 + latest 'M4 candidate' WTP
I-build, so I don't know whether it's been fixed in M4 or not.
Lastly, if I report it as a bug, which Webtools components should I report
the bug against ??
Thanks,
Laurent

If there's ever any doubt, just "Java Standard Tools" will be sufficient to get
it looked at, and re-routed to another component if appropriate.
About the internet connection ... the DTD's/XSD's are attempted to be retrieved for
other things besides validation (for example content assist is one case). So ... not
sure what's triggering it in your case, but if it seems in appropriate, please
open a bug or feature request to "stop doing that or give some options". I do think
there were some bugs opened in this area and maybe resolved for M4, so would be good for you to
re-check once that's available.
As for the hang, its pretty mysterious that control break wouldn't work from the
(DOS) console window. Which VM are you using?
As for the apparent hang ... I've seen similar situations where "popup windows" are
basically popped up behind the main window, "freeze" the system waiting for input,
and are very difficult to "get to", even if you know they are there.
On windows, ctrl-tab sometimes makes them apparent.

Thanks David, I'll check M4 once it's out

I'll probably file a 'feature request' too, cause in my view there Eclipse
should not require an Internet connection for such 'basic things' as
creating a Web project or a simple Servlet.
I just wonder why you don't simply include all 'common' DTDs and XSDs
within Eclipse itself, since most of them won't be changing anyway (like
webapp23_dtd for one) I suppose I could do it myself using the XML
catalog, but then I suppose Eclipse would still want to access the net for
content assist or something else ?
I really find this 'need to be online' rather unjustified and
unjustifiable... As far as I know, using WSAD 5.1 does not require an
Internet connection at all...

I'm using Sun JDK 1.4.2_07 for Windows (XP Professional SP1) at work, and
roughly the same at home (might be a previous patch level of JDK 1.4.2,
that's all)
Just to be sure... this is the command line I'm using to launch in
Debug/Console mode:
eclipse.exe -debug -consolelog
What is odd is, Ctrl+Break in the 'DOS' box does produce a thread dummp on
my home PC, but it never works on my work PC... Only difference I can see
is, I am more 'restricted' on my work PC: I don't have local admin rights,
and there are other limitations in the way of general permissions /
policies...

Hmmm... That's an idea... It does look like as though there's a modal
dialog hidden somewhere that I cannot click and that's preventing me to do
anything... Plus the system being idle, and there being no 'system tasks'
showing in the progress view (I've configured it to show system tasks), I
find this could be a likely explanation...
Thanks about the 'Ctrl+Tab' hint, I was unaware of this, I'll give a try
next time !!
Cheers again David for your time, I really appreciate that,
Laurent
