I'm doing research on the feasibility of the Eclipse Tool Platform for
large-scale real-time software development. I would appreciate your
insight on some of the following questions:
In stead of reviewing what I mean by "large-scale" and "real-time" from
a development point of view, lets just use the capababilities of a tool
environment like Rational Rose RealTime and the target language is C++,
for example. Ignoring for now that there is a possibility that RRT could
be made into a Eclipse plug-in, which would then establish the feasibility
to dev these kinds of systems.
I know some of these answers will be like "no we are not there yet" or
"there are some exist but are not mature for serious dev", but can you
help me understand when one might expect it to change....
1. Is there at least one plug-in choice available for these activities
yet:
o building models with UML 2.0 elements, in a GUI browser or from
diagrams
o full UML 2.0 diagram support
o code generation
o executable runtime for generated code
o debug
o test
examples of CPL/Free or commercial plug-ins would be helpful
2. Will XMI be the standard means of storing all UML1/UML2) models? Or,
will that be vendor specific?
3. If the model storage is XMI, does that imply that there's an API that
would allow traversal and extraction of information about the UML elements
to use for custom code generation or other?
4. What are some of the road blocks ahead that might prevent Eclipse and a
set of CPL/Commercial plug-ins from being a dependable, rich, development
environment for developing these types of apps?
5. What is your sense of the time frame for when Eclipse can support
serious large-scale real-time development as exemplified by RRT, i.e.
building executable models.
I'm really interested in your opinion. I know for some of these there's no
clear answer yet. I'm relatively new to the Eclipse Project and I'm
excited about the potential....it's a good thing.
Thanks
