Questions about 2.0 (and future deliverables) [message #90317] Fri, 11 November 2005 15:41 Go to next message

Hello;
Have upgraded to 2.0 M2 and must say - it rocks! I have a few general
questions or "requirements" that I hope someone from the development team
can respond to. I would liek to know if there Feel free to ask for
clarification if my requests are too sketchy:
* We would like to be able to run "unqualified" SQL. Any way to provide a
configurable default schema for SQL? This would be to support migration
from dev->qa->prod where schemas change at different project phases.
* In the viewer, is it possible to suppress the initial running of the
report with default parameter values? This would prevent the report from
running until the user pressed the "run report" button.
* Any recommended approach (or support) for using BIRT in a batch mode?
We would like to schedule the running (and possibly distribution) of
reports to run overnight and allow the user the option of looking at
pre-run results or running in real time.

Thanks for all the great work.

Pete,

RE: Batch Mode

I'm running BIRT 1.0.1 reports in batch now (only in test, but I haven't
had any problems yet so it looks good). There's really nothing magic to it;
it's just like a foreground run except you have to know beforehand what
parameters you want to pass into the report. Is your problem that you need
the code to run the report, or do you not have a scheduler in your app? If
it's the latter problem, have you looked at Quartz; I'm not actually using
it myself (its a legacy system with a home-brew scheduler) but the buzz on
quarts is pretty good from what I can see.

Hi Patrick;
Thanks for the response. I'm all set on the code for running a report in
batch, but there is ALOT of potentially generic infrastructure for batch
report generation:
* Scheduling (though for this we could use our enterprise scheduler as you
suggest)
* Distribution (e.g. email)
* Metadata and API for managing report requests, parameter setting,
notification, etc

I'm trying to get a feel for what (if anything) along these lines is in
the long term plan for BIRT.
