[newsgroup]new newsgroup splitting (users and developers) [message #81858] Wed, 25 June 2003 03:40 Go to next message
Eclipse UserFriend
Hi all
I wonder if we can make another split in the newsgroup.
i see here that there are 2 kinds of questions:
1- questions about how to use Eclipse from a user prespective (How to
refactor , problems with cvs , how to update ,....)
2- question about how to develop plugins that runs under eclipse (how to
make a prespective , problems with creating views,....)

so i think that there must be 2 news group , one for eclips users , and
other for eclipse plugin developers
waiting for your comments

thanks
joe

I never really understood why they did not yet clearly separate
discussion groups for plugin-development (i.e. using Eclipse API and
PDE) and for simply using Eclipse as an IDE...

Instead of continuing this thread here, you should open a feature
request and vote there.

That's pretty much what everyone said before the newsgroups were reorganized
the last time. :(

The newsgroups, lists, etc. appear to be organized to parallel development
groups within OTI/IBM.

Isn't this what we already have? I thought it was:

eclipse.platform - Typically JFace development questions/comments
eclipse.platform.swt - SWT specific questions/comments
eclipse.tools.jdt - Eclipse usability questions/comments

Is this not the current structure?

Not really. tools.jdt is stated in the opening append as:

Welcome to the JDT newsgroup. This group is for technical discussions
about the Eclipse Java Development Tools (http://www.eclipse.org/jdt/).

There is no newsgroup for only how do I use Eclipse kind of questions.
eclipse.platform has turned into a catch-all that includes these kind of
questions plus anything else that doesn't fit into the other categories.
The actual mission stmt in the header for the newsgroup was questions
about developing plugins. However a follow-on append in the opening
thread turned the newsgroup into a catch-all instead.

I also vote for one that is for usability questions only.

There already is one: <https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=19399>

Note that report is pretty old - it predates the reorganization by quite
a bit. It took forever to get whomever controls the newsgroups at IBM to
take notices of this need in the community, and most of the suggestions
there included separate groups for plug-in developers and users. In
fact, what we currently have is nothing like the common suggestions made
by the community in that bug report.
In case you can't tell, I am not very happy with the management of these
newsgroups; it is unresponsive and doesn't seem to be listening to what
the community is asking for.

There is a benefit in the fact that eclipse developers get to read user
questions. Taking it to the absurd - if you create newbies only
newsgroup and for some reason experienced developers won't read it, they
won't be able to give each other much help.
