Why newsgroups? [message #75124] |

Hi,
I would like to understand the reason why the eclipse user 'forums' are
hosted using usenet news?
I myself started using news 11 years ago and I like it, but in my mind
there are a few reasons not to use it for this purpose:
Cons:
1) Firewalls have been popping up like crazy all over the place. 99% of
the time this cuts off access to news directly. (No you cannot get your
admin to change this as most of the time he is a far bigger idiot than you)
2) Web interfaces like this current forum, sucks. It would be better if
you could
search it and access archives.
3) Its not searchable unless you have access to the archives.
4) All information going back years aren't available in general.
Pros:
1) Spam less common.
2) Probably less network intensive as it is based on selective pull
instead of push.
My main gripes are archives and searchability as you want to find data
that is relevant when you want than accessing the newsgroup on a regular
basis.
What do other users think?

I agree that the search interface could be improved (as well as the
search accuracy, which is still an issue).
Google or even google-like interface could be very good idea.
(I think that if Mr Palmisano (CEO, IBM) calls Dr Schmidt (CEO, Google)
they can work out a deal :)
