The current version of SWT Designer works with Eclipse 3.5 and higher. Maybe you are referring to the old 6.9 version of SWT Designer that was released ~3 years ago and deprecated ~2.5 years ago when v7.0 was released.
WindowBuilder is now open source, so, yes, I would expect you to look at the source. Given what I think you want to do (create a custom SWT property editor), there are lots of "samples" available right in the source itself. Looking at the existing property editors is quite easy, and will show you the full range of what is available to you.
The "last time" you used SWT Designer, I am guessing that it was a commercial product with paid, commercial support. It is now an open source project which still has very good, free support. We are happy to point you in the right direction, and I happen to believe that looking at the source is absolutely the best course of action for you.
