Why newsgroups? [message #75124] Mon, 16 June 2003 05:25 Go to next message
Eclipse UserFriend
Hi,

I would like to understand the reason why the eclipse user 'forums' are
hosted using usenet news?

I myself started using news 11 years ago and I like it, but in my mind
there are a few reasons not to use it for this purpose:

Cons:

1) Firewalls have been popping up like crazy all over the place. 99% of
the time this cuts off access to news directly. (No you cannot get your
admin to change this as most of the time he is a far bigger idiot than you)

2) Web interfaces like this current forum, sucks. It would be better if
you could
search it and access archives.

3) Its not searchable unless you have access to the archives.

4) All information going back years aren't available in general.

Pros:

1) Spam less common.
2) Probably less network intensive as it is based on selective pull
instead of push.

My main gripes are archives and searchability as you want to find data
that is relevant when you want than accessing the newsgroup on a regular
basis.

What do other users think?

maybe it's because newgroups are simply better?
(threads, no spam mail, able to ignore and mark threads etc.)

You haven't found a decent news-agent after 11 years?

I'm using mozilla as my agent and it works fairly well:
http://www.mozilla.org/

Here is the eclipse nntp-server:
news://news.eclipse.org

This is the-mailinglists:
http://eclipse.org/mail/index.html

And here you can search the archives if you choose not to do so with
your news-agent:
http://eclipse.org/search/search.cgi

Same here (Outlook Express). But he babbled something about
firewalls (come on admins are just humans - they deserve respect
to get them to work).

In addition to the eclipse.org search page, you can access web-based
archives here:

http://dev.eclipse.org/newslists/news.eclipse.platform/maill ist.html
http://dev.eclipse.org/newslists/news.eclipse.tools/maillist .html
.... etc ...

Respect is useful, but so are dire threats and bribery...

I don't know of any, if your isp don't provide one you can try google:
http://www.google.com/search?q=public+nntp

I agree that the search interface could be improved (as well as the
search accuracy, which is still an issue).
Google or even google-like interface could be very good idea.
(I think that if Mr Palmisano (CEO, IBM) calls Dr Schmidt (CEO, Google)
they can work out a deal :)
