Simon,
I hope you find it helpful. We wanted to address a wide range of Eclipse
users, from the first time user to the experienced plug-in developer. A lot
of the material is based on our experience helping ISVs integrate their
products with Eclipse and teaching a weeklong course on plug-in development.
So it has been reworked what seems like hundreds of times following
Eclipse's evolution and ISV / student feedback.
There's a lot to cover in Eclipse, so we organized it such that readers can
readily find what interests them. For example, Part I is about running
Eclipse, Part II is about extending Eclipse. Since that topic has a lot to
consider, Part II is further subdivided into "fundamentals", "advanced", and
"special interests". Part III is seven exercises varying from beginner to
advanced. Finally, the CD-ROM includes templates for the exercises and
working examples for each chapter. It is a large book, but it is by no
means meant to be an end-to-end read. It is intentionally modular so you
can skip around as needed.
Uhhh-h... sorry, I sound like a commercial. I'll stop now. :-o :-)
Returning to your question: Our book doesn't cover J2EE. However, I
understand that Kyle Brown is working on the second edition of his book,
"Enterprise Java Programming with IBM WebSphere" that does
( http://www.aw.com/catalog/academic/product/0,4096,0201616173 ,00.html). His
book is especially helpful if you're using IBM's WebSphere Application
Developer (which of course is based on Eclipse), although it has a
considerable amount of design advice that applies to whatever toolset you're
using.

Thanks, I'll look forward to your feedback. You should get your hardcopy
soon, I just got mine yesterday. It isn't as thick as I expected. The
publisher must have used thin paper. ;-)

The future looks bright for Eclipse authorship -- check out "Eclipse
Modeling Framework" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0131425420/) and
note that it's part of "the eclipse series". I'm pleased with the choice of
series editors (Gamma, Nackman, and Wiegand), too.
A little "behind the scenes" information. Our publisher realized the
potential of Eclipse as the production date neared and modified the cover.
If you were watching closely... "Java" was in huge letters on the original
cover and "Eclipse" was there almost as an afterthought. We wanted that
changed from the beginning, but they wouldn't hear of it ("it's part of our
Java series... it has to have the same look and emphasis as the series...
Java has a known track record... the resellers know where to put Java
books -- they'll misshelve a book with 'Eclipse' on it under astronomy..."
and on and on). Then their resellers started asking *them* about Eclipse
titles -- whoa boy, what a change that made! New cover, new series, and no
risk of getting misshelved. :-)

Publishers love readers like you (and authors, too).
Once there is a core set of Eclipse books, I have little doubt that more
"diminutive" books covering extended topics will become the norm. There's a
lot of ground to cover and it needs to be covered in such a way that's
accessible to a wide range of readers. It's our hope that "The Java
Developer's Guide to Eclipse" appeals to the varied learning styles and
experience levels of the growing Eclipse community.

It took me about four days to learn how to write a plugin - unfortunately I
picked a problem that required using the launching plugin and then
copy/paste. I'm hoping this book and others coming will make that learning
curve a little smaller (although the people on this newsgroup made the
learning experience faster than it would have been otherwise, so thanks to
you all).
