For a project, under /.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/.history
there a many sub-folders /0 to /ff which take up many mb.

What are these for ? Can they be deleted ?

Hi,
My answer is no.
This is the content that can be used in the Package Explorer for the
Restore from Local history.. by selecting on any Java or plugin project.
this option gives you the flexibility of being able to recover some file
that you accidently deleted.
This information is I think of utmost use since in a practical scenario
anythign can happen.
Besides it is only a few MB.

I am also not sure whether it is required anywhere else.

Regards,
Vikram
