Eclipse (on Linux) is slow and freezes (doesn't repaint) 2 or 3 times a day [message #60801] Wed, 04 May 2005 21:35 Go to next message

I am using eclipse to develop a project in Java on linux (Redhat 9 and
Sun's JDK1.4.2_05)
I have been using eclipse 3.0.1 for 2 or 3 months but in the last couple
of
weeks, I've had some real problems with it (I haven't knowingly changed
anything).

It is frequently slow, so it takes 2 or 3 seconds for text I was typing to
appear.

And worse, when I switch to another window (on another desktop) and then
switch back to eclipse, eclipse freezes. It won't repaint, so its just a
gray background with 3 white boxes where the editor, perspective viewer
and console where.

Sometimes I can click where I think the File menu should be, and a blank
menu (without border) appears. Also, when I move my mouse cursor over
where the divider should be, between the perspective viewer and editor,
the cursor changes to indicate that I can move the divider. I can click on
it and resize the white boxes that have taken the place of the perspective
viewer and editor.

No keyboard shortcuts work.

This happens 2 or 3 times a day.

My only recourse has been to kill eclipse and start over, wasting 5 or 10
minutes (eclipse does take a while to start up too).

I really want to fix this problem becuase I don't want to have to deal
with problems with whatever IDE I'm using, I want to work on my project.

:)

Sounds like your CPU is getting hammered. Check your CPU monitor (or
top). Have you recently installed any new plugins in Eclipse?

Simple question, but have you tried a clean install of Eclipse?

Check your memory usage, I use gkrellmd. You could be running low.

CPU usage for eclipse when it gets frozen is at 0%, and I have 95-98% of
my CPU idle.

I'm not sure what you mean by a clean install.

A few days ago, I downloaded eclipse 3.0.2 and decompressed it into a
different folder than where I had put eclipse 3.0.1.

I am running low (~40 MB) on physical memory when eclipse freezes, but
I still have hundreds of megabytes of swap space and hundreds of megabytes
of physical memory(occupied by other, mostly idle processes), so eclipse
could push other processes onto swap space and have plenty of physical
memory to work with.

I restarted eclipse this morning with "eclipse -vmargs Xmx256M" so that
eclipse would 256 MB of heap instead of 64 MB. Other posts about eclipse
crashing (not freezing) had suggested trying that.

I tried that, but eclipse still froze after about 10 hours of use, so I
don't think that expanding the heap size helped at all.

Eclipse is still freezing.

I'm using eclipse 3.0.2 on Redhat Linux 9 (i686) w/ Sun's J2SDK 1.4.2_04

I've tried running eclipse with "eclipse -Xmx256M", but that doesn't help

Any ideas?
