Can't I just edit a file? [message #60786] Tue, 03 May 2005 21:58 Go to next message

I'm tired of the quirkiness of xemacs, and people are recommending
Eclipse as a development environment. I don't use Java; I've mostly
been working in Perl and PHP, and am now starting to use Ruby on Rails.

Eclipse has a very nice editor. But I can't seem to simply start
Eclipse and edit a file. I have to create a project, import files into
the project, synchronize them if they're remote, etc.

That works well for formal projects, but not for things like web sites
where you're just occasionally pulling various bits of HTML and PHP into
an editor.

Isn't there any way to just open a file and go? What about remote files
(SFTP)? The SFTP plugin seems to be a synchronize method.

You can use File>Open External File to open any file from your filesystem.

Ah hah! Thanks. Don't understand why that's not "File | Open" like the
entire rest of the English-speaking world for the past 20 years...

I gather there's no way to do the same thing with remote files, though.
That's too bad.

I always keep a "Sandbox" project in my workspaces for that kind of
thing. In my case I make it a Java Project so I can easily do Java
coding/runnning with its contents, but you could make it any kind of
Project you need.
