Call for WTP M2 Feedback [message #55904]

Eclipse User

We are planning to release the WTP M2 milestone on Dec. 22 and would
like to get your feedback on its readiness. Please test the latest
builds and assess the functions that are advertised in our milestone
plan for M2.[1] If you find problems, please open Bugzilla defects. Our
M2 exit criteria is that the High priority items work. Thx.

How do we test it? Using the latest nightly of Eclipse 3.1 M4 or the M3
release?

Basically you should test most recent I-build, on Eclipse M3, and all the prereqs
listed on build page.

I've updated the milestone plan with some links to the component
test plans and mini-test-tutorials. The tutorial in particular has
the steps for getting things installed and running with server, etc.

Eclipse M4 does not come out until at least the end of this week

Is there some kind of quick-start guide available (eg. how to start from
scratch, what are the project types, how do they fit together)?

I would classify myself as WTP beginner that organized his J2EE projects
in tha past in a complete different way than the WTP does. Whenever I
try something on the WTP I'm hit by "beginner" issues. For example, last
time I defined a Tomcat 5.5 server in the preferences and then invoked a
wizard to create a new web project (just for trying something). However,
I never got the server to pop up in the combo provided in the wizard,
until I discovered, that the wizard is expecting a J2EE server (not a
Tomcat server) although I just wanted to create a simple "web" project
with some servlets and JSPs etc.

Yes ... we are still building with M3 until M4 is officially released on 17th. If all
goes smoothly, we'll just upgrade to M4 and 17th or 18th and
do a little sanity checking with that build to be sure is still ok. If not ok, we'll
at least know how we stand using M3.

David,
Is there instructions for build from cvs - I can't download
all requierments every times - I build eclipse from cvs easy
emf,gef and vep isn't to big for download, but webtools and eclipse are big
problem for me is only : build webtools from cvs (i have webtools cvs tree)

It discusses using PDE targets and the Eclipse releng tool to "load map projects".
That summarizes how I do it anyway ... if that post doesn't get at what you are asking,
please re-post.

Eventually we will make use of Eclipse's update manager.

We are still pretty early in development, and we know everyone giving it
a try are on the "bleeding edge" ... so, thanks for the efforts.

I don't understand eclipse building proces - I will check cruise.xml and
try build with ant
I have last eclipse cvs, ve 1.0.2
Is it last build gef and emf (full sdk) enough ?

The release seems to work fine but makes the UI somewhat unresponsive. I
guess a lot operations are executed in the UI thread. Example: save of a
simple web.xml takes 4 seconds. Save of a simple Java class takes up to
10 seconds. Same workspace but without WTP plugins runs much faster.

Another example:
- Open the Server view
- right click on server
- select "Add or remove projects..."

=> takes 24 seconds till the dialog is open!

note that I only have two projects in the workspace (one from the WTP
tutorial any my own project). Only the WTP tutorial project contains a
Java class. The other project is a J2EE Web Project two but containes
only a directory "contribution" with a few zips and their extracted
content (around 1600 files).

Gunnar,

Thanks for the performance feedback. Please open Bugzillas at [1] for
each of these problems. Try to select the most appropriate component.
For example, the web.xml problem is probably in the jst.j2ee component.

We are taking performance very seriously in this project. Jeffrey Liu is
our dedicated WTP performance analyst and he has a lot of experience
diagnosing these problems.

Changing the server name to contain no spaces solved the issue (I
forgot that someone had already posted this issue). Everything else seems
to work slick.

I had the same errors, and by removing the spaces worked.

Suprisingly here:

You'll want the latest I-build.. But the thing with the spaces hasn't been
fixed (yet) in the Wed, 22 Dec 2004 -- 06:58 (-0500) build.
