Hi everybody,
Following parts of our conversation this week and duties I am happy to take
and coordinate for STEM, too, please also have a look at some of the Eclipse
Babel threads.
Especially the latest Babel PTT explains many steps useful for Babel
support. Not only for the Galileo release, although all projects which aim
to be included with Galileo need to take even more care about that.
So using Babel for STEM shall also profit from all of these projects as they
have to be localized the same way within this quarter.

Here's a quote from the Babel newsgroup, regarding Localization. As STEM is
part of Eclipse.org this may be slightly different, but especially for used
subprojects like EMF or GEF those with messages apply in a similar way

Following our call and upcoming presentations of STEM, how far is it (I
guess if Ganymede is at least below, Eclipse Base is translatable via Babel)
with Spanish?
Especially in rural parts or Mexico English may not be so common as let's
say in the capital.

Otherwise the thread "Babel PTT" from the Babel newsgroup shows most of what
is to be considered.
You mentioned, the NLS class was used by STEM where applicable, is that
correct?

Most of the code in the main STEM ui plugin is NLS "ready", meaning that it
gets its strings from a bundle file. There might be a few places where this
is not true in that plugin, but not many. There are some other plugins that
contribute to the UI for disease model analysis processing, I'm not sure of
their current state with respect to NLS.
One of the major NLS issues for STEM is the English centric nature of the
internal geographic datasets. All of the data used by STEM is in property
file format. Developers run a utility to parse these files and generate
serialized (XMI) instances of (EMF) objects that represent them and can be
used in models. The use of English in those property files would need to be
addressed for a full NLS solution as those strings eventually appear in the
interface to name geographic locations or other components of a model.

Eclipse BIRT has similar problems, but at least regarding embedded
Properties files, they or a RCP application embedding it use Babel and its
predecessor Eclipe ResourceBundle Editor (@SF from the same committer I got
to Babel)
This and similar examples for XML data in multiple languages like the UI
elements defined by Google Android or Silverlight (there is a propsed
Eclipse project for that) are on my general "Radar" for Babel. Last year's
ESE presentation on Babel I gave was also attended by Visual Studio PM Tim
Wagner. Maybe some of you saw him at EclipseCon this year?
He used to be BEA's WTP lead.
