It seems on windows if I exit the RCP app by hitting the red "X" a different
path is followed for the application exist than if I use a regsistered
ActionFactory.QUIT.create(window); action? Why are they different , how do I
hook the red "X" on application shutdown?

Drew,

You can use the WorkbenchWindowAdvisor.preWindowShellClose() method in
order to hook the red "X" on shutdown.
