Yes, the 1.3 VM must be on your system path. Try this:

eclipse -vm <path-to-java-1.5>\jre\bin\javaw.exe

I installed the JRE 1.5 into the jdk1.5.0_02 directory. Eclipse is
installed onto c:

Any thoughts?
Thanks,

I don't remember my windows command line terribly well, but I think if
you're actually in the directory that contains eclipse.exe (cd
c:\eclipse or whatever) you'll have better luck. Alternatively, you
could add the eclipse directory to your path environment variable. But I
definitely don't remember how to do that off the top of my head.

Thanks for your response. Now when I try entering eclipse -vm
<path-to-java-1.5>\jre\bin\javaw.exec: from where eclipse is installed I
get a message telling me that
"A JRE or JDK must be available in order to run Eclipse. No JVM was found
after searching the following locations:
c:\j2sdk1.4.2_07\jre\bin\javaw.exe:

I do have a jre directory inside the c:\j2sdk1.4.2_07 directory though.
Maybe this isn't the correct place to have jre?
I do see javaw in \jre\bin

I wish it was easier. I wish I could simply double-click the Eclipse.exe
and it would run.

Are you literally entering <path-to-java-1.5> on the command line? Or
are you entering the path to your java 1.5 installation.

Now that I've tried it on windows, my command line looks like this (run
from the eclipse directory):

eclipse -vm "c:\program files\java\jdk1.5.0_01\jre\bin\javaw.exe"

The quotes in my case are necessary because of the space in "program
files". They may not be necessary in your case.

Yes I am actually inputting the path which because I changed to
j2sdk1.4.2_07 is:
C:\j2sdk1.4.2_07\jre\bin\javaw.exe:

When I input that I get a msg that there's no JVM.

I noticed your path displays jdk but mine j2sdk.

At the risk of being just nitpicky, are you including the colon in your
command (after javaw.exe)? I'm thinking that shouldn't be there. Other
than that, or the javaw.exe file not actually existing, I'm not sure
what to tell you. Maybe you could cut and paste the actual command
you're typing.

separate occasions with no luck

eclipse -vm c:\j2sdk1.4.2_07\jre\bin\javaw.exec:
eclipse -vm c:\j2sdk1.4.2_07\jre\bin\javaw.exec
then tried this because in the jre dir there exists javaws directory
eclipse -vm c:\j2sdk1.4.2_07\jre\bin\javaws.exec:
eclipse -vm c:\j2sdk1.4.2_07\jre\bin\javaws.exec

Hope that helps...

Try without the trailing 'c':

eclipse -vm c:\j2sdk1.4.2_07\jre\bin\javaw.exe

That usually indicates that Eclipse was unzipped incorrectly.
Can you tell us what directories you have under where you installed
Eclipse? And which version of Eclipse are you using (ahem, attempting to
use ;-) ? (3.0.x or 3.1Mx)

Setting up Java on windows is somewhat separate from Eclipse, but can be
confusing.

There are three Environment Variables that I suggest investigating. You
can modify these temporarily from a command prompt, but you can modify
them "permanently" from the System Properties. (If you need help
finding them, please let me know)

The three variables I suggest working with are these:

JAVA_HOME
PATH
CLASSPATH

JAVA_HOME should be set to the directory where java is installed, which
looks like this for you: c:\j2sdk1.4.2_07

Next, the PATH variable should have all other JRE's and JDK's removed
from it and this put in instead (at the beginning of your path to make
sure it overrides anything you missed):

%JAVA_HOME%\bin;(rest of your path)

Finally, this is something that gets tons of people, the CLASSPATH
variable in windows should be at minimum this (which is exactly what
mine looks like):

..

If there are other values in the CLASSPATH then make sure .;(others) is
the way it looks.

When you pull up your command prompt you can type SET<enter> and it will
list all of your environment variables.

*NOTE* The Variables like %JAVA_HOME% will be expanded; This is how your
path variable should look:

PATH=c:\j2sdk1.4.2_07\bin;(plus others)

or it's not right

With this configuration, I can type eclipse when I'm in the eclipse
directory, and it loads successfully.

Good luck! Feel free to keep asking if you're having trouble.

Don't give-up. It is very simple to bring eclipse up.

Assuming you have installed your jdk correctly, do the following:

1. unzip eclipse download zip file. to c:\lisa_eclipse
2. open a a command prompt and change directory to c:\lisa_eclipse\eclipse
folder.
3. run dir command to confirm you have eclipse.exe file.
4. now run this set command: "set PATH=c:\jdk1.5.0_02 \jre\bin;%PATH%"
(double check if the jre\bin path is set correct)
5. run eclipse.exe without any parameter.

It looks like you're missing the "plugins" directory. This is where 99%
of the code for Eclipse is stored. If you're missing this directory,
you must have either deleted it or unzipped the download incorrectly.

It's not that complicated at all.
Assuming a JDK is installed and in c:\Java\JDK\1.4.2
Create a shortcut to eclipse.exe that uses the following command line
(bare minimum - you can include other -vmargs arguments later if necessary):

D:\Java\Eclipse\3.0.1\eclipse.exe -vm D:\Java\JDK\1.4.2\bin\javaw.exe

Make the working directory for the shortcut be the same as the directory
that contains eclipse.exe (D:\Java\Eclipse\3.0.1\ in the example above).

Once you have that shortcut, you can double-click it to launch Eclipse.
This will prompt you for a workspace location - the default is under the
directory containing eclipse.exe, but I always choose to put it at the
same level as eclipse instead of under it, like this:

c:\
Java\
Eclipse\
3.0.1\
plugins\
features\
etc...
workspaces\
3.0.x\
3.1M4\

Eric
