Problem when using TPTP/Data Collection Infrastructure on AIX [message #32246] Wed, 21 September 2005 04:55 Go to next message

Hi all, any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

We have installed and configured the IPOT (IBM Performance Optimization
Toolkit) DCI (Data Collection Infrastructure) [essentially TPTP] on
WebSphere 5.1 application
server running AIX 5.1.0.0. We have then installed and configured RPT and
the Performance Analysis Part of the IPOT on a windows desktop.
Everything appears to fine when we create a new "J2EE Application" profile
to connect to the AIX server on 10002 - the "connection success" message
appears when we test the connection. When we then try to carry out memory
profililing of the remote
application we receive an error message (attached as an image) saying that
the Data Collection Infrastructure appears not to be running. We have
stopped, started uninstalled, reinstall and reconfigured the DCI on AIX
several times, and even installed it on another machine but with the same
problem.
I have setup a Windows WebSphere install and configured the same DCI stuff
on it and can connect without a problem so everything seems to be ok on the
RPT install, which then points the finger at the AIX configuration.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? or can make any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Hi David,

I've notified two of our IPOT developers, they're working on the problem and
will get back to you shortly.

Hi David,

Sorry to hear that you ran into problems using the DCI.

The error message you got means the IPOT agent is not being returned to
the workbench even though the Agent Controller is running. Could you
please try to attach to the agent instead (Profile -> Attach - Java
Process)? The agent name should be ARM Data Collection Agent.

Also, are you using IPOT 6.0.1?

Attaching to the agent with "Profile -> Attach - Java Process" works
perefectly.
What does method of attaching do differently?

Thanks!

Dave

In DCI, two agents are actually used: ARM data collector and piAgent. If
version 6.0.0.1, if either is not found, the DCI not running message will
be displayed.

Did you also see the agent called 'Java Profiling Agent' in the Attach
dialog? Did you instrument and restart the application server?

Only the ARM data collector appeared in the list, no sign of piAgent/'Java
Profiling Agent' at all in the attach dialog.......

We have intrumented, uninstrumented and restarted the server serveral times
but to no avail.

I think this is the problem. The piAgent must be present in order for the
DCI to work correctly.

Let's have this discussion off-line.
