Initializing java tooling hangs at 0% [message #319627] Tue, 28 August 2007 12:45 Go to next message

Hi Folks,

I am using eclipse 3.2.2 on windows (Build id: M20070212-1330). I have 30
projects in my workspace. When I start eclipse it hangs at the point where
the active task is initializing java tooling. The only way out of this I
have found is to create a new workspace and import all my projects again.

Does anyone know what is going on here and what I can do?

Many thanks,

Miles

Miles,

Maybe you can use this to see what's causing the deadlock:

How long does it hang for?

Are there any interesting contents in the .log file? (Under the workspace
..metadata folder.)

Some people have reported very long lags in startup of workspaces with
projects containing many (ie tens of thousands) of warnings. Don't know if
that's your situation or not.

Miles,

On my platform, I'm seeing the "Initializing Java Tooling" hang at 60%
complete for perhaps 20 or 30 seconds (Eclipse 3.3, Linux Fedora Core 3 on a
fairly speedy box). It eventually completes, but it is a disconcerting
stall. In my runtime workspace where I see this behavior I actually have
*no* java related projects or source code (only 3 or 4 projects related to
my tool application), so I'm not quite sure what it is initializing for all
that time. No entries of interest appear in the workspace's .metadata/.log
file.

A quick bugzilla search did turn up a report that seems related:

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=188712

We'll see where it goes,
-Pete

Note this bug is about "Initializing Java tooling" taking a long time,
it is not about it hanging (ie. never completing). It is marked as
"needInfo" btw. So no progress can be made until we get more information.

If you have a case were "Initializing Java tooling" never completes, I
would suggest to enter a separate bug report, including thread dumps
to help us debug it.

Agreed. I've posted the exceptions I've seen that may be related to the
java tooling taking a long time to initialize to that bug report; hope it
helps,
-Pete
