I have an environment that ideally consists of about six sets of plugins,
including Jigloo (a SWT editor) and Jess (a decision engine). I have had
intermittent problems with these two plugins or features disappearing, and
have spent several hours with the following strange results.
If I install these plugins into a virgin Eclipse distribution, everything is
well. If I then choose to download the SWT Examples via the suggestion from
the Welcome page, this blows away both of them. The plugins and features
are physically present, but are quite invisible. This is not altered by a
clean restart.
I started over and discovered that ANY kind of update from the Eclipse sites
or Callisto blows these away.
I eventually did the following: I built Eclipse with only Subclipse plugins
added to it; to this I added a very large group of plugins from Callisto,
including BIRT, data development, Web access, modeling, etc. I also
downloaded all the SWT examples into a local director, once and for all, so
I could avoid ever being asked to do this again.
I then added my own plugins, hibernate, jigloo, and jess. Everything is
working fine.
So this long winded question is related to how is the Eclipse updating
mechanism blowing away a couple of fairly robust and mature plugins (Jess
and Jigloo)?
