There is a command to hide the editor area.
It is neither available in the menus nor is it bound to
a key sequence, but you can assign it a short-cut
on the Keys preference page (Window > Preferences > General > Keys).
Search for Category "Window", Name "Hide Editors".

....do you mean having two editors open at the same time in a single
workbench window (you can't do that...) or having one and only one
editor at a time, but having the editor change when the perspective
changes (you can do that...)?
