Is it possible to have each Perspective have its own editor area so that
when switching between perspectives, the editors from one perspective are
not seen in another.

If this is not possible, would it be possible to hide editors without
actually closing them?

There is a command to hide the editor area.
It is neither available in the menus nor is it bound to
a key sequence, but you can assign it a short-cut
on the Keys preference page (Window > Preferences > General > Keys).
Search for Category "Window", Name "Hide Editors".

Eclipse cannot do that now, there is a bug open for this enhancement
(although I was unable to locate it at the moment).

Another possibility might be to use multiple workbench windows since they
each have their own editor area: Window->New Window.

....do you mean having two editors open at the same time in a single
workbench window (you can't do that...) or having one and only one
editor at a time, but having the editor change when the perspective
changes (you can do that...)?

Yes, this is possible on 3.2,.. attaining this behavior requires some custom
classes,..let me know if you would like to know how.
