Anyone have any pointers to docs, articles, whatever on proper error
handling within a plug-in? Logging and UI?

Personally, my pattern is to use WorkbenchPlugin.log(...) for every
exception, and to open an ErrorDialog for those warranting informing the
user. Unfortunately, WorkbenchPlugin is internal code, and so not fit for
general consumption. However, its implementation of the log methods is
very straightforward; they could be copied to your own plug-in.

The general logging API is Plugin.getLog() and ILog() ... both provided by
org.eclipse.core.runtime.
