Hi!

I've been googling arround for a week now looking for BIRT tutorial that
will help me integrate a report into a java application. I also scanned
the messages in this news group but couldn't find what i'm looking for.
I am wondering where people from the news group learn how to use BIRT
and integrate it to their application. Can somebody please point me to
an article, tutorial or anything where I can learn how to do it.

Thanks in advance! :)

I think I'm in exactly the same situation as you Jag. I have a
standalone SWT/JFace application that accesses database, etc. And I'd
like to design reports that can get populated with data and presented to
the user as and when user chooses to do so.

I understand the relevant part of the system is Report Engine. But I
cannot for the life of me get started without at least an API reference.
From what I have seen (and heard in the media) of BIRT, I think it's
brilliant and the BIRT guys must be praised for the great job they have
done. I do feel however that like in any other commercial scenario, if a
product cannot be used, it's effectively not really delivered. Maybe
it's not an issue for most people (I don't understand why), but I would
really appreciate if two things were made public some time soon:

1. API reference for all components of BIRT.
2. A tutorial/example showing how a BIRT report may be deployed in an
application.

Many thanks guys.

Jay

Jag,

Integration appears to be a hot topic of late. We're somewhat surprised that
integration has become this urgent so soon after the first BIRT milestone
release.

I'm working on a document that explains how to use the BIRT viewer in an app
server. Others are working on creating an example, and describing other
deployment options. Sorry for the delay in making this material available,
but it should be done in the next week or so.

Jay,

Thanks for the kind words about BIRT. The team has just gotten the first
couple of builds up on Eclipse. We are focused on getting the product ready
for 1.0 release by May. At the same time, we are working on preparing API
and deployment material. But, as you may imagine, doing so is a bit hard
while the deployment area and APIs are still changing. Still, we realize
that this material is important, and we'll release this material over the
upcoming weeks. For the APIs, for the time being, you can build the Javadoc
directly from the code. Obviously not ideal, but it is an option if you want
to get a jump start until the docs are up on the BIRT web site.

hi Paul,
The links on the BIRT deployment in the www.eclipse.org/birt doesnt seem
to work. If you have the info could you please forward to me.

There are lot of questions on integration in the forums, but i could not
find any
complete asnwer yet. The tutorial you are said in this forum, will be of
great help for BIRT aspirants like me and others....

Naveen,

Thanks for letting me know about the bad links. Based on your note, I found
two broken links at the top of the main page under "deployment", are there
others? Let me know and I'll fix 'em immediately.

The BIRT viewer is becoming stable, and the deployment section provides
information about using it. Let me know if you find anything that is missing
or unclear; I'll go ahead and add it. (Getting another person's feedback is
always quite useful to help fine tune this kind of info.)

The report engine API is being revised based on some feedback from early
users. The team has done a couple of reviews of the revised API. I'll post
information about the API as soon as the API is stable enough to do so;
perhaps within a week or two.

In the meanwhile, you can help us out by describing how you'd like to
integrate BIRT into your application. Will you use the BIRT "viewer" or
integrate the Engine directly? What sort of application are you building?

Thanks,

- Paul

Hi Paul,
Sorry for late reply.

As per your instructions listed in :-
http://www.eclipse.org/birt/index.php?page=deploy/viewer-dep loy.html

Locate the Eclipse plugins directory.

>>Find the org.eclipse.birt.report.viewer_0.0.1 plugin. Open this directory.
>>Copy the birt-viewer directory to the webapps directory of your Tomcat
>>installation.

birt-viewer directory is available only in the latest build( build
name:S20050404). Earlier builds only have viewer directory under
org.eclipse.birt.report.viewer_0.0.1.

Right now, i am developing a web based application with database backend
for which BIRT Viewer is good enough to show the reports.

Report Engine API will be really helpful. If i can successfuly get BIRT
Viewer work in web, then i can easily save from writting lots and lots of
code.

using this sample to test the viewer

" http://localhost:8080/birt-viewer/frameset?__report=reports% 5Ctest.rptdesign&sample=Hello"

but what i got is "Error Message"

and also in Tomcat log, i have this message also

" org.eclipse.birt.report.engine.impl.embeddedengine.getreport handle " and

Wins,

Interesting. Let's see if we can track down the problem. First, what OS are
you on? From the look of the error message, I'd guess a version of Windows.

Which build of BIRT are you using? I'd recommend Milestone 2 instead of the
more recent S20050419 build.

The path in the error messages suggests that the BIRT web app is somehow
looking in Tomcat's bin directory for the reports instead of in the report
folder. You created the reports folder under the birt-viewer directory, and
birt-viewer is under webapps?

The sample report does not use a database, so it can't be the issue of JDBC
driver installation.

Check out the above and let me know what you find, then we'll go from there.

Naveen,

Except for the error message, do you see other problems? The specific
error message you see is bogus and the problem has been fixed recently.
When BIRT extension framework locates plugins, it looks at all folders in
the $BIRT_HOME/plugins directory. The drivers directory is under
$BIRT_HOME/plugins, but is not actually a plugin.

Wins,

Seems that app tries to locate the report in
"c:\jakarta-tomcat-4.1.31\bin\.\reports\test.rptdesign". This is not
expected. I suspect there is somethign wrong with the deployment.

Let's try using absolute path first to verify this deployment. Say your
report is in "c:\report\test.rptdesign", try url
" http://localhost:8080/birt-viewer/run?__report=c:\report\tes t.rptdesign&sample=Hello".

If this works, then let's verify the location of your "birt-viewer" dir.
In normal case, it should be in "C:\jakarta-tomcat-4.1.31\webapps",
assuming your tomcat root is "C:\jakarta-tomcat-4.1.31".
"C:\jakarta-tomcat-4.1.31\bin" is the place for runnables.

Then let's check the deployment description file
"birt-viewer/WEB-INF/web.xml" and see whether the parameter of
"BIRT_VIEWER_REPORT_ROOT" is empty or not like this below.

<context-param>
<param-name>BIRT_VIEWER_REPORT_ROOT</param-name>
<param-value></param-value>
</context-param>

Let me know if there are still problems.

thx,

Jun

Wins,

See the "integration" topic on the BIRT web site: www.eclipse.org/birt. This
will walk you though setting up the BIRT web app on Tomcat. It explains how
to use a URL to pass parameters to your report. Or, you can let the web app
display a parameter entry form.

If you want to do more, you can use the BIRT engine API within your own app.
The team is just wrapping up some major changes to that API, and we'll have
some info posted on the revised API in the "integration" topic sometime next
week (if things go well.)

Naveen,

yes, i have already seen the sample 'test.rptdesign' report w/parameter
using Tomcat 4.1.31, if you havent seen it yet my advice is check all the
versions of the software you are using from eclipse to tomcat see if they
are the ones recommended by Birt team ...and make sure you have followed
all the steps in

http://www.eclipse.org/birt/index.php?page=deploy/viewer-dep loy.html

to deploy the birth viewer.....good luck....
