I am still on a steep learning curve, exploring Eclipse and some plug-ins I

the Eclipse online help and other docs, but haven't found anything helpful.
- How can I install a plug-in out of a downloaded zip file from within

the plug-in directory, but I wonder if there is a way to install locally
available zip files using the update/configuration manager of Eclipse 3.0.

- How can I uninstall a plug-in? I thought I could do this using the
uninstall option in the configuration manager context menu (the one to
enable or disable plug-ins). In fact, there's a menu entry "uninstall", but
it's disabled for SolarEclipse. I've removed entries from several
configuration/XML files, and I deleted the files of this plug-in in the
plugins subdirectory, but I still see it in the configuration manager. It's
disabled, meaning that I should be able to uninstall it --- at least,
that's what the online help says. Or is un-install for features, and not
for plug-ins?
Any hint pointing me to relevant information much appreciated!

As I had no .eclipseproduct file, I first re-installed Eclipse 3.0. Now I
have that --- no idea how it went lost....
Following your suggestions I created a directory structure like the one you
describe, copied .eclipseproduct into the new "eclipse" directory, and
renamed it to .eclipseextension.
I unpacked a feature (EMF) and a plug-in (Tomcat plug-in from Sysdeo) into
that folder, and used the Eclipse configuration manager to add the
extension directory tree as a local extension site (forgive me if my
terminology does not yet follow the "official" Eclipse jargon, I'm just
learning). And right after that it looks like EMF was already installed,
while the Tomcat plug-in is not to be seen.
Could it be that the mechanism you describe is suitable for features only,
but no for plain plug-ins?

Is the Tomcat plugin dependent on some non-existing plugins (like xerces) ?
If so, it will be disabled by the runtime.
You may also want to start eclipse with -clean.
