As promised, another post describing my problems on Windows.

I installed a fresh Windows XP. Did all the updates, to SP3 etc.=20
Installed quite a lot of additional software (OpenOffice, Firefox,=20
MingW, Putty, =E2=80=A6)

Downloaded Ganymede. Ran it, installed some extra packages (CDT, JDT,=20
WST, Subclipse, Texlipse, Dutch language pack). Everything fine.=20
Checked out some of my projects from svn, did some configuruing.

I then edited my user privileges, making myself non-privileged user. (I=20
suppose this is irrelevant, but you never know.)

Restarted WinXP once more to get install yet another update. After=20
restart, whenever I try to open Eclipse, I see the splash screen flash=20
by, and that=E2=80=99s it. Tried several different ways of starting it, =
no effect.

Installed it in a new location, downloaded another package, even=20
downloaded a 3.3.1 build, all the same: short flash of the splash=20
screen, then nothing.

I am out of ideas what I could do now. I am at the point of erasing the =

whole Windows installation and starting it all again, this time waiting=20
meticulously until all updates are finished before installing another=20
program or anything.

Any ideas?

Where does Eclipse store the information which workspace to use by=20
default? I have this slight impression the projects in the workspace=20
are the culprit.

Cheers, H.

Hi

What you are doing is a so called "multi-user installation":
http://help.eclipse.org/ganymede/index.jsp?topic=/org.eclips e.platform.doc.isv/reference/misc/multi_user_installs.html

Some time ago I had similar issues under Linux and the solution
was quite simple:
- Make sure the entire eclipse installation is not writable by users
- Eclipse must never be run by any user having write access to it's
installation directory (will spoil the configuration subdirectory).

Just wondering why you would make yourself a non-privileged user. Many
program require the user to have admin rights. I don't know if Eclipse
is such a program, but you might want to give that a try.

To make up for the non-security Windows offers (you might notice that I=20
am by now a convinced Linux user).

I did, no luck.

Other ideas?

That site wasn=E2=80=99t very helpful. Well, yes, I now know what the=20
configuration directory is for, but the problem persists.

Hm, how to do this on Windows?

On my Linux system, I install plugins by running Eclipse as root, then I =

get them myself as well. So at least the privileged user can get access =

there.

I think I have found it. There was something wrong with the Java.=20
After reinstalling Java and Eclipse, things seem to be working now.

I still have myself as non-privileged user, only an admin-account to do=20
program installation.

Let=E2=80=99s see if it suffices to put Eclipse in c:/Program Files (actu=

Your launch configuration includes a reference to a file in your project.
Since the absolute location of the file contains a space, this is what is
causing the problem. You need to enclose the library path reference in
quotes. Try adding this to the VM Arguments section of your launch config
(notice the quotes):
-Djava.library.path="${resource_loc:/MonaSearch/libraries}"
or
"-Djava.library.path=${resource_loc:/MonaSearchlibraries}"

BTW, all of your posts show up in my news reader as attachments. That is
why I didn't quote your entire message.

From your launch configuration:

<stringAttribute key="org.eclipse.jdt.launching.VM_ARGUMENTS"
value="-Djava.library.path=${resource_loc:/MonaSearch/libraries} "/>

Thanks you very much. This was indeed the problem.

In the mean time, I also found out how to compile my JNI with MinGW, and
everything is working now. JAY!!

I really have to write all this stuff down somewhere.

Cheers, H.
