what is .eclipse/ directory under my home directory for? [message #256235] Tue, 13 May 2008 19:34 Go to next message
Eclipse UserFriend
Hi,

I noticed that Eclipse creates .eclipse directory under my home
directory the first time I launch it. If I delete this directory, next
time when I launch Eclipse I will not have the list of my existing
workspaces shown up in the "Select a workspace selection" dialog.

Googled around and I didn't find any links explain what this directory
is for :(

Other than the workspace information, what other persistent status are
kept under ~/.eclipse? I'm interested in knowing how big the footprint
of Eclipse has on my home directory.

Also, what are the impacts if I am running multiple Eclipse instances
from multiple installations as they will have to share the same ~/.eclipse?

Any documentation pointers are much appreciated.

Thanks
Maggie

Hello

That's the user's configuration location. The footprint is very low
- in my case it's just about 3 KByte (after years of using Eclipse).

More information about configuration locations can be found in the
Eclipse documentation about multi user installations:
http://help.eclipse.org/help33/index.jsp?topic=/org.eclipse. platform.doc.isv/reference/misc/multi_user_installs.html
