Install sequence for Eclipse? [message #251847] Wed, 19 March 2008 09:47 Go to next message

Hi All

Thanks to Tom and Walter I have discovered that the problems I have been
experiencing in my last post have been due to my having Eclipse 3.2
installed while running with SWT 3.3.

Looking at the build on my Ubuntu machine I found I had redundant soft
links all over the place with the jave build and so decided the simplest
course was to rebuild the laptop with a fresh install of Ubuntu.

I now have a virgin machine and want to install Eclipse 3.3 and SWT 3.3
and would apreciate any advice I can get on the best way to go about this.
My thoughts are to: -

1) Install a JRE
2) Install Eclipse 3.3
3) Install SWT 3.3

in that order, does that look like a reasonable course to take?

I also need advice on what would be the best JRE to download and install
for this and how to tell if the default install of Ubuntu has already
installed a JRE.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Bradley

Sounds right.

I would go with Sun JDK 1.6. You definitely want a Sun JDK or JRE (not
GCJ, which is the Ubuntu default).

Check out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EclipseIDE. I found it very
helpful. It has details on how to sort out the JRE/JDK business.
You'll want to follow the "User Installation" instructions for Eclipse,
as the Universe repository has an older version (3.2 rather than 3.3).

You don't need to install SWT-3.3 because it is part of Eclipse 3.3.

I recommend specifying the JVM in eclipse.ini as described here
http://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse.ini
