Why is Tomcat Wrapper plugin part of RC1? [message #249133] Thu, 03 June 2004 17:29 Go to next message

This seems odd, but when I run Eclipse 3.0 RC1, and go to Help -> About ->
Plugins, I find a tomcat wrapper plugin there. I know Eclipse is not trying
to tie itself to a specific vendor of appserver/webserver, so why would a
tomcat wrapper be part of the core IDE? Is this an accident? If it is there,
then we should probably have wrappers for Jetty, Resin, Orion, JRun, etc to
be fair. Or is Tomcat the preferred choice of servlet engine by the Eclipse
team despite better ones being available?

Ahh, ok. I didn't know it was needed for that. I can open up html pages in
any browser without a server running. But I understand now.

The app server (tomcat) is pluggable. You can roll your own version of an
app server, as long as it satisfies some constraints mentioned in the
org.eclipse.help.appserver plugin.
