Where does an eclipse user find the meaning of all the icon decorators?

There used to be a page in the help that listed the meanings of the
decorators, but I cannot find that page in the new version!

It's nice to have all these cute little icons (I guess), but if a user
doesn't know what they mean then it becomes pointless.

I can find massive amounts of documentation on how to create a decorator,
but I don't care about creating a decorator. I just want to know what the
decorators that appear in my project mean.

What version? I use 3.2.2 and if I open Help Contents and search for
"icons" it returns several pages that describe the various groups of icons.

Hope this helps,
Eric

I'm using 3.2.2 as well. I have yet to find anything about the icons used in
Update Manager.

If you post a screenshot and label the icons in question, I'm sure
someone can provide the meanings for you.

I'm specifically asking about the decorators for the icons. So, for
example, one decorator is the yellow triangle with a red exclamation point
that is attached to a java file icon. I know what that decorator means.
But, what about all the others?

Where in the eclipse help system are the decorators documented? You can
find page after page of how to write plug-ins and for those plug-ins, how
to add decorators for your plug-ins. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE END USER?!!! My
guess is that all these decorators are NOT documented! So, they are
essentially useless.

There are a few things I like about eclipse, but there are many things I
don't like about eclipse. And the lack of proper documentation is one of
them. The fact that it is free makes the problem even worse because now
development management won't pay for a proper IDE...if one even exists
these days (I don't count anything by Microsoft.)

But nobody will write a proper IDE now because they have to compete will
all this free-ware, geek-ware. And so, we are stuck with this. IDE's
that are half-baked, and even less documented. Instead of making our jobs
easier, they are making it more difficult. I guess that explains why so
many people still write code using VI!!!

Let's see how much help that rant generates...
A little advice I'm sure you don't want: if you're looking for help or
acceptance of your ideas from a community, its probably not a good idea
to insult the very thing that is the center of that community.
Constructive criticism (for example, bug reports or enhancement requests
or, best of all, actual code or documentation contributions) is the way
to go, not rants that insult the people who have work very hard on a
product and those who help others for free.

The icon that puzzles me is the one by the highlighted item that looks like
a red plus sign in a red square.

What am I missing here? I'm using 3.2.2, and it appears to me that most if
not all of the icons and decorators are documented in the help. For
example, open Help Contents / Java Development User Guide / Reference /
Icons and you get a pretty large list. There is a yellow triangle with an
exclamation point (I think it's black) that means "this Java element
causes warning". Is the issue that there are some icons or decorators
missing from this list? If so, perhaps a bug report would be in order. I'm
sure the UA project can always use more help.

Regardless of whether a software product is commercial or open source,
it's up to us lowly users to report bugs and documentation issues if we
want to get them corrected. Thanks. Mark Dexter

Maybe there is a lot of half-baked free geek-ware, but there's some great
free software. In some cases, the best apps I've found for a certain purpose
are free. Here's some free ones that I use in addition to Eclipse :

Jedit's searching features are THE BEST I've found.
MySQL
Apache server
Exact Audio Copy
Firefox
PowerPro
Skype
Excalibur
Syncbak
Qlock
VLC
PC Wizard
ERUNT
Process Explorer
Handbrake
CamStudio
MySep
Quickfolders
Filezilla
Copernic Desk Search
WinLAME
IZArc
Window Clippings
Cubic Explorer
Editpadlite

Makes me feel grateful for all the work put into these. If I had to pay a
relatively cheap 30 bucks for each one, that'd be over 700 bucks worth
already.

IntelliJ is an excellent not-free IDE. Please feel welcome to go use it.

Tom, thanks for the great list! I've already downloaded CamStudio and will
look at these other packages as I have time. Mark Dexter
