I've been googling arround for a week now looking for BIRT tutorial that
will help me integrate a report into a java application. I also scanned
the messages in this news group but couldn't find what i'm looking for.
I am wondering where people from the news group learn how to use BIRT
and integrate it to their application. Can somebody please point me to
an article, tutorial or anything where I can learn how to do it.
Thanks in advance! :)

Jay,
Thanks for the kind words about BIRT. The team has just gotten the first
couple of builds up on Eclipse. We are focused on getting the product ready
for 1.0 release by May. At the same time, we are working on preparing API
and deployment material. But, as you may imagine, doing so is a bit hard
while the deployment area and APIs are still changing. Still, we realize
that this material is important, and we'll release this material over the
upcoming weeks. For the APIs, for the time being, you can build the Javadoc
directly from the code. Obviously not ideal, but it is an option if you want
to get a jump start until the docs are up on the BIRT web site.

Thanks Paul. I'll wait for the tutorial and/or examples. In the
meantime, I'll build the docs from code.
Keep up the good work!
Jay.

Naveen,
Thanks for letting me know about the bad links. Based on your note, I found
two broken links at the top of the main page under "deployment", are there
others? Let me know and I'll fix 'em immediately.
The BIRT viewer is becoming stable, and the deployment section provides
information about using it. Let me know if you find anything that is missing
or unclear; I'll go ahead and add it. (Getting another person's feedback is
always quite useful to help fine tune this kind of info.)
The report engine API is being revised based on some feedback from early
users. The team has done a couple of reviews of the revised API. I'll post
information about the API as soon as the API is stable enough to do so;
perhaps within a week or two.
In the meanwhile, you can help us out by describing how you'd like to
integrate BIRT into your application. Will you use the BIRT "viewer" or
integrate the Engine directly? What sort of application are you building?
Thanks,
- Paul

Paul,
I also have a problem in running the sample for BIRT_Viewer integration
wtih Tomcat. As you said, test.rptdesign should not use any JDBC
drivers...unfortunately my TOMCAT logs show
Apr 22, 2005 9:55:47 PM
org.eclipse.birt.core.framework.server.ServerPlatform <init>
SEVERE: load plugin C:\Tomcat
5.5\webapps\birt-viewer\WEB-INF\plugins\drivers failed
I am using the M2 build.

Naveen,
yes, i have already seen the sample 'test.rptdesign' report w/parameter
using Tomcat 4.1.31, if you havent seen it yet my advice is check all the
versions of the software you are using from eclipse to tomcat see if they
are the ones recommended by Birt team ...and make sure you have followed
all the steps in
http://www.eclipse.org/birt/index.php?page=deploy/viewer-dep loy.html
to deploy the birth viewer.....good luck....
