Updating Eclipse Error after download and installation [message #1780706]

The error when trying to update eclipse Oxygen is:

An error occurred while uninstalling
session context was:(profile=epp.package.cpp, phase=org.eclipse.equinox.internal.p2.engine.phases.Uninstall, operand=[R]org.eclipse.cdt_root 9.3.2.201709131603 --> null, action=org.eclipse.equinox.internal.p2.touchpoint.natives.actions.CleanupzipAction).
Backup of file /opt/eclipse/notice.html failed.
File that was copied to backup could not be deleted: /opt/eclipse/notice.html

The problem from my online searching seems to be permissions to write files on linux. So,
how do I give the correct root permissions to the eclipse application so that the updating is successful?
