Future of RAP [message #1773105] Thu, 21 September 2017 11:41 Go to next message

Hi,

we are using RAP for a while now and are very thankful it exists.

But what will the future bring for RAP?

Is it meant to have a long lifespan/support ?
New features, what's the vision of the RAP project...

it's not that we are looking for migrating to another framework.
But if we need to, then we would like to anticipate to it in advance.

Kind regards,
Wim

Hi Wim,

the RAP project celebrated its 10th birthday last year - no one would have ever anticipated the direction that it finally took. We always tried to listen to our user/developer community and to the many companies building their products on top of it, and used this input to decide upon the next steps. As a result of this, the RAP project is now known as a stable, feature complete project that allows you to build single-sourced, workbench/e4-based or standalone RWT applications based on the familiar SWT API. Of course, we will continue to support it in the future by implementing customer-driven features [1], and by providing bugfixes.

One change that we introduced just recently is the shorter release cycle to let users benefit from improvements or from additions much faster. Instead of having a single release every year, we plan to release new versions with every Simultaneous Service Release. E.g. with Oxygen we released RAP 3.2 [2] in June, and now we released an updated RAP 3.3 [3] with bugfixes *and* some new features together with Oxygen.1 yesterday. Right now we are quite satisfied with this new release process, as it makes our lives easier (less overhead because we do not have to maintain multiple versions), and adopters get access to new features sooner.
