Upgrading from M2 to M5 [message #168428] Tue, 09 December 2003 19:20 Go to next message

Are there any instructions on doing an upgrade from M2 to M5?

I did a simple unzip to the directory, but got failures on creating Java
PackageExplorer and Hierarchy classes, so I unzipped M2 again and deleted
everything newer than it in the plugins directory.

Do I need to download and unzip M3 & M4 first?

Thanks.

Best way is to erase M2 completely and then unzip M5. During development
new versions should be unzipped to a clear directory for best results.

I second that. The API is in flux for the 3 series and starting from
scratch is a good way to go.

what about the workspace dir, could I preserv this? the projects and
configurations set (the export/import at least should work) could be
reused.

You may be able to. Give the following a try:
1. Backup the workspace directory to a location outside the eclipse
installation root, call this
<workspace-location>.
2. Install M5
3. When launching the new Eclipse installation, add the command-line
argument -data <workspace-location>
to have Eclipse use your original workspace directory.

This is generally good practice as it means you can complete a clean install
/ upgrade of eclipse without loosing
project settings etc.

Just clear some ideas to me :

- Do I need to use -data option just in the first time?

- Why in linux it always use the workspace at the home dir and linux the
default is to use the workspace inside the eclipse dir?? Besides, in
linux, if I have the eclipse dir not in the user's home the workspace is
put inside eclipse dir, as in windows.

Upgrade instructions are always found in the readme file. See
eclipse/readme/readme_eclipse.html, section 5.
