Hello,

i want to use Eclipse for C++ Projects, but i am not able to do this.
I use SuSE 9.3 and i have reinstalled eclipse today on the normal way with
yast2 from the ftp server ( http:://ftp.gwdg.de or http:://ftp4.gwdg.de /
both are on my chooser ).
Then i started eclipse and downloaded the plugin from
http://download.eclipse.org/tools/cdt/releases/callisto as it was prefered
on http://www.eclipse.org/cdt/downloads.php.

Then there was a message, that all changes become active, after restarting
the workbench.
Unfortunely after restarting i am not able to start a C++ Project and i
have no idea how i can solve this problem.
My experience is very low with using SuSE and ( of course ) Eclipse, so i
hope i can find here someone who can help me.

I hope i will be ablte to use Eclipse for my C++ Projects, so i am waiting
for your help!

MfG
Sebastian Grimsell

Somewhere along the line you installed a JVM beyond the gcj-based
version that SuSE gave you, right?

Callisto... this is at odds with what you say below...

This is NOT an Eclipse version to load Callisto updates onto!

Go to the Eclipse website (http://www.eclipse.org), click on the
"Callisto is here!" image (http://www.eclipse.org/callisto), click on "I
build C/C++ applications" (http://www.eclipse.org/callisto/c-dev.php),
and work through the tutorials and the like. Bottom line... start with
the FOUNDATION for the Callisto release, the Eclipse 3.2 SDK, and update
from there.

.... and make sure you have a JVM that will work with Eclipse first...
from Sun, IBM, BEA, wherever...

this and all that follows is out of whack with that whole "downloaded
callisto plugin" part.

I really think you should start over and work with the more current
release! Just my not-so-humble opinion.

Hello,

first of all thanks for your fast help!

I tried a lot to fix my problems with your help, but unfortunaly at the
moment i am not able to start eclipse ... And i do not understand the log
file ! :-(

Now i want to change the way of solving, so perhaps the actual version
runs correct ?!

My new question is, how can install the current Eclipse Version and the
C++ plugin. My softwareinstallation-oportunities i have, offer me only the
3.0 Version ... It could be, that the problem is the old version ?! On the
other hand i hope that i can use Eclips on the way i want, when i have
3.2?!

I am sure, that the most problem with eclipse is the failing of my
experience on using the OS and to handle the problems, which normaly are
to solve during an installation.

But i hope someone could help me through my newbie life .... ;-)

Best wishes from Göttingen ...

Sebastian

Wie gehts? :-)

You're working with SuSE, and you want to use their installation setup.
But that means you constrain yourself to whatever has been packaged to
be used via that setup.

IF you can instead download and install, even if just for your own use,
you can use the Callisto release that came out ~2.5 weeks ago instead.

You'll need a JVM. If at a command prompt you type "java -version" and
get "-bash: java: command not found", there is no JVM on your path. Go
to http://java.sun.com and get a Java for your machine and follow all
the instructions for installation. It's fairly straightforward.

(If you get some long message including a line that says "gij (GNU
libgcj) version ..." you'll want to add to/replace that Java with a
"real" one that works better with Eclipse.)

If now at the command prompt you get the same behavior, you don't have
your PATH set up to get the JVM. At some point you should have done
something like "export PATH=/path/to/java/bin:$PATH", and perhaps were
even told to put it in your .bash_profile so it occurs on login each time.

Now go to http://www.eclipse.org, click the "Callisto is here!" link,
and follow the instructions for C/C++ users. It involves downloading an
Eclipse SDK, starting it, and then using it to Update to the Callisto
additions you need (C/C++, and don't forget to "Select Required" to get
all it depends upon).

If, instead, you insist on just using what SuSE provides via its
installation setup (YAST?), you'll have to deal with SuSE folk to get it
going.

But if you want to go the path of installing yourself, I'll help as much
as I can... just post follow-up questions and I'll try to help as best I
can.

The installation was done by experienced persons of my friendship, who i
can not meet at the moment, so i try everything on my one way.
And the configuration on the system installation setup tool yast was made
some time ago, with the 'normal' sites, where the most important software
packages are stored. So the 3.0 version of Eclipse.

If now at the command prompt you get the same behavior, you don't have
your PATH set up to get the JVM. At some point you should have done
something like "export PATH=/path/to/java/bin:$PATH", and perhaps were
even told to put it in your .bash_profile so it occurs on login each time.

Now go to http://www.eclipse.org, click the "Callisto is here!" link, and
follow the instructions for C/C++ users. It involves downloading an
Eclipse SDK, starting it, and then using it to Update to the Callisto
additions you need (C/C++, and don't forget to "Select Required" to get
all it depends upon).

If, instead, you insist on just using what SuSE provides via its
installation setup (YAST?), you'll have to deal with SuSE folk to get it
going.
<
Unfortunally i can not start eclipse ( when i try to start there comes a
message with a hint, that i have to check the log-file, which i appended
at the end ), so i tried to change my way of solving the problem and i
downloaded the file eclipse-SDK-3.2-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz from the
eclipse.org page. But ( as i said before ) my knowledge of serius using my
operating system is very low, so i do not know how to uninstall the 3.0
version and to install the 3.2 version.

can.

Not stupid at all! No need for self-deprecation here.

I presume you got the x86_*64* version of Eclipse intentionally? But the
Java runtime version, though available as a 64-bit version (if I really
1.4.2_11 correctly), isn't what you have here... My experience is that
64-bit systems will run 32-bit software or 64-bit software... but it
won't mix them together. Trying to run a 64-bit piece of Java software
(with some native components) on a 32-bit JVM is not a recipe for success!

What hardware are you running on?

I don't think after doing plug-in for C/C++ tools, you should have
problem. Probably, don't worry with flavor of Linux. Simple after doing
succesful installation of C/C++. Do following -
1. Execute the eclipse.
2. Customize the settings.
3. On top RHS you see a square box, left click and - Debug, Team Synch..
&
Other appears, click on Other. Select C/C++ from POP-UP window.
Finally
OK.

First of all, i want to tell you, that i am not sure, whether i hope that
the exact problem why eclipse does not run correctly is found.
I already asked you how to uninstall the current eclipse version and to
install the actual 3.2 version. But when there are 64/32 bit problems,
this would not work too ...

My new hope is, that there are no big problems because of my 64 cpu
because i unfortunaly need 64bit for my c++ project.

By the way ... i have a question on 64/32 bit:
Does 64 bit software on a 64 bit cpu work faster in opposite, that a 32
bit software ( of course when for some computations more then 32 bit but
not more then 64 bit are to be used ) ... ? Or does the 32 bit software on
a 64 bit system choose ( for example ) only 32 bit integers to use ...
I thought on 64 bit there is ( for example ) INT_MAX == 2^64 and on 32 bit
only 2^32 .... within the context of c++ programming ...
Are these constants related to the system or even to the software too ???
I hope you understand what i mean ...

Uninstalling a version of Eclipse: This usually just means to remove the
directory where you unzipped that version of Eclipse. There's no
"registry entries" or other system level changes made. That's for
"Eclipse proper" ... since you're using SuSE's YAST, I'd suggest asking
it to remove the old package before moving on to the new.

Okay, then you're going to have to be careful and make sure you're
getting only 64-bit pieces put together... if you're not familiar with
Linux, that could be difficult. Even experienced Linux people have
problems putting the pieces together!

For Eclipse on Linux, that means (1) making sure you're using a 64-bit
JVM (I've had mixed experience finding 64-bit versions of JVMs... I've
finally just settled on using BEA's JRockit JVMs myself); and (2) making
sure that you're getting 64-bit systems libraries ... I can't help you
much here... I've seen problems where the x86_64 version of Eclipse
couldn't find the 64-bit GTK libraries... I'm hoping your Linux finds
the right version automatically... reading through the stack trace
neither confirms nor denies that as the problem for me, as I'm not
OSGi-knowledgeable... sorry!

I think I understand the question, but despite my place of employment,
I'm not really expert in this area... much to my embarrassment! I'll see
if I can get a colleague more knowledgeable in this area to respond.

Sorry I was so long responding... I took a few days of vacation.

If you're working from "eclipse-SDK-3.2-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz" as
mentioned in your 07/17 post, you're getting the 64-bit Eclipse
version... but you need to get an explictly 64-bit Java JVM to go with it.

Hi Sebastian,

From your initial post I see that you were using eclipse 3.0 with CDT 3.0,
which is incorrect since these versions of eclipse and CDT are not
compatible with each other. I guess this was the initial source of your
problem with inability to use CDT.
Here is a brief "CDT<->eclipse compatibility" list:
CDT 3.1 requires eclipse 3.2
CDT 3.0.x requires eclipse 3.1.x
CDT 2.x requires eclipse 3.0.x

I strongly encourage you to use the latest versions of CDT and eclipse,
i.e. eclipse 3.2 and CDT 3.1

Since you have an x86_64 OS, you have two options:
1. use 32 bit version (x86) of java and eclipse+CDT
2. use 64 bit version (x86_64) of java and eclipse+CDT

As I understand, you have 32 bit version of java already installed, so the
first (32 bit) way might be easier for you, though you might encounter
some potential problems with debugging 64 bit applications with your
32-bit CDT.

In any way, let me briefly describe the steps needed for setting up both
32 bit and 64 bit environment for you:

32 bit:

Since you already have the 32 bit java installed, to setup a 32 bit
eclipse+CDT environment you only need to download the 32 bit version of
those products:
Eclipse 3.2 Linux (x86/GTK 2):
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.2-20 0606291905/download.php?dropFile=eclipse-SDK-3.2-linux-gtk.t ar.gz
CDT 3.1 Linux/x86
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/tools/cd t/releases/callisto/dist/3.1.0/org.eclipse.cdt-3.1.0-linux.x 86.tar.gz

After downloading those packages you will need to unpack them into one and
the same directory.
After unpacking you will have the “eclipse” directory created in the
directory to which you unpacked the packages. The installation is complete
now. You can go the “eclipse” directory and launch “eclipse” executable
located in that directory.

64 bit:

You will need to install the x86_64 version of java (see e.g.
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp for SUN JDK 5.0 download)

You will as well need x86_64 versions of eclipse and CDT:
Eclipse 3.2 Linux (x86_64/GTK 2)
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.2-20 0606291905/download.php?dropFile=eclipse-SDK-3.2-linux-gtk-x 86_64.tar.gz
CDT 3.1 Linux/x86_64
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/tools/cd t/releases/callisto/dist/3.1.0/org.eclipse.cdt-3.1.0-linux.x 86_64.tar.gz

Use the same instructions for Eclipse+CDT installation as listed above for
the 32 bit version install.

Regards,
Mikhail
