How do I use Eclipse 3 to view multiple files in the editor at the same
time so that I can compare them?

Open 2 editors.
Drag one of them down to the bottom of the editor area until the drop icon
becomes a down arrow.
Drop

You can also select two files in the PackageExplorer, ContextMenu>Compare
With>Each Other

I must be missing something, but how do you open two editors?
It would also be really nice if I could view more than 2 files at once in
the editor pane. And also several parts of the same file. Is there a
window split command?
Thanks,
Jim

I guess opening an editor = opening a file. So I have several open. If I
drag the top bar too the bottom or the right, I do get the arrow, and a
black line for a split appears, but when I release the mouse, nothing
changes.

I figured it out. The "tab" is not really a tab. It is the little icon
that looks like a square root sign. Dragging the icon works. Dragging
other spots on the bar appears to work, but does not.
