I've read somewhere that artifact can also contain files other than
plug-ins and features. If that's true how can I accomplish that ?

In the artifacts.jar of an eclipse site (e.g.
download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/3.5-I-builds/) look for the word
launcher. Basically it is just another artifact.
Then you need to have an IU (the metadata part) that refers to it through
an artifact key and do something with it.
