Is there an easy way to convert an existing Java project to a web project
to use the features of the webtools?

There is no tooling to convert a java project to a web project but one
option you can try is creating a new web project and copying or
importing the the contents of the java project into the web project at
the correct locations of the web project where the web project can compile.
