Update Eclipse SDK using local files [message #117170] Wed, 27 August 2003 07:04 Go to next message

Is it possible to update the Eclipse SDK through the Update Manager
using locally downloaded newer version? More specifically I want to
update 2.1 to 2.1.1 and I've downloaded the 2.1.1 distribution
locally. I've some other third-party features installed which I
don't want to re-install if I go with a fresh 2.1.1 distribution.

I think you could have used the Update Manager to update your 2.1 directly,
without you having to download the zip file.
I think it is also relatively safe to just unzip the new 2.1.1 on top of
your 2.1 install.

I have pretty slow dial-up connection that's why I prefer to
download the whole package to have it locally for further use.

Anyway, thank you for your reply, Dorian.

Update manager needs site.xml files to decribe the features to update.
If there are any in the distribution you downloaded, you can locate them
with the Update Manager.

Otherwise, you have to manual installation by copying your features and
plugins
from 2.1 to 2.0.

Thank you, Chris. Seems this is the info I've needed. There's no
"site.xml" in the zipped builds so will have to do a manual
installation again.

Having a snapshot of the update site would be a nice convenience - we've got
firewall issues that make it almost impossible for a java-based program to
get through using http.

You can open the site.xml with a browser and download it your machine,
and then install the features from a local network?

Open this in your browser and save locally:

http://update.eclipse.org/updates/site.xml

Then download the referenced features and plugins also, save them in
the right location. Major puzzle. I admit.

If you do this often and your organization is big enough, you may want to
set
up an internal mirror of eclipse.org. See:

http://download.eclipse.org/downloads/mirrors/index.html

Or use a tool to mirror features from update site.
http://dev.eclipse.org/viewcvs/index.cgi/~checkout~/platform -update-home/doc/working/documentation/standalone_update.htm l
(at the bottom) describes how to use it (pass -command mirror).
