Inadvertantly, Eclipse was started twice on the same machine. Each copy
was immediately closed without making any changes or running anything.
Now after starting Eclipse and trying to debug java code the following
error ocurrs :

Exception ocurred during launch

Reason:
Source locator does not exist: org.eclipse.jdt.debug.ui.javaSourceLocator

Attempting to look at the Preferences shows basically no information.
That is, the tree that is to appear on the left side (with Workbench,
Ant, Build Order etc) is empty.

Anybody have any ideas to correct the problem?

Same thing happened to me, and renaming the main eclipse directory got it
to go away (no idea why). There were some posts about it in
eclipse.tools.jdt.
