Slow down eclipse [message #115266] Mon, 10 November 2003 03:12 Go to next message

Hi

I have a not-so-powerful box running Win2k. My box goes on a huge amount of
activity often. I want to turn of features in eclipse so that the amount of
work it does automatically is reduced.

What options should I turn off?
What are the costly operations?

I have seen build is a automatic process in M4. yes, I use 3.0M4

Hi,

Below is a list of some of my suggestions (all of them are under
Preferences). The list shows my personal preferences (in my order of
importance):

0. Check how much memory Eclipse can use (-vmargs parameter)
1. Consider closing all unnecessary projects at a time (not just using
working sets) and/or using different workspaces for different project sets
(-data parameter)
2. Select low in Workbench-->Work in Progress-->Machine speed
3. Change Java-->Update Java views to: On save only
4. Turn off quick diff option for all editor types (workbench, ant, java)
5. Turn off overview ruler for all editor types
6. Use a rather small number in Tasks and Problems views (Filters-->Limit
visible items to: e.g. 300)
7. Turn off Link with Editor feature in Navigator and Package Explorer views
8. Turn off Java-->Editor-->Annotations-->Analyze annotations while typing
9. Turn off all label decorations (Workbench-->Label Decorations)
10. Turn off Workbench-->Perform build automatically on resource
modification

HTH,
Regards,
Csaba

Nice - could you put this on the wiki to be referenced and extended?
