Updating a read-only installation? [message #112708] |

Hi,
I just watched a windows user (I use linux) install Ganymede
and then use the p2-UI to add our features. After everything _seemed_
to work OK, our features were not functional, because p2 failed
to write back modifications done to eclipse.ini and config.ini.
At a closer look this was quite natural since he didn't have
write permissions to those ini files (eclipse was installed from
the Administrator account). Even manually editing config.ini
(as Administrator) did not help. Assumably some cached configuration
files had locked the previous settings.
Two things to discuss:
1) Updating should report when anything goes wrong, right??
(this is not the first request of this kind..)
2) What recommendations should be given to people installing
Eclipse from an admin account before running (and updating!)
from a plain user account?
What permissions exactly must be granted?
Are there any HowTos related to this on the net?
thanks,
Stephan
