Eclipse 3.1.1 crashes when I go from the "Welcome" screen to the Workspace view [message #110976] Sun, 23 October 2005 13:21 Go to next message

In general, the mouse interaction in the Eclipse GUI is a bit strange on
my machine (Windows 2000 Prof., SP4 German). When I click on the different
buttons on the "Welcome" screen, nothing happens. Tooltips are displayed
when I move the mouse across the icons, but clicking them (also
double-clicking) has no effect.

I noticed almost by chance the faintest hint of a selection rectangle
which seemed to move when I clicked the different symbols, so by hitting
"Enter" e.g. when "Overview" is selected, I can view that topic (it would
be nice if the rectangle were a solid color instead of something almost
invisible...)

But when I do the same on the arrow in the upper right-hand corner to "Go
to the workbench", Eclipse crashes with exit code=1 and a little dialog
with configuration parameters.

I am running the latest Java SDK from Sun (1.4.2-09). My Eclipse version
is 3.1.1 with build ID = M20050929-0840.

Thanks!

could be helpful to know what config param are in that little dialog to
help u out ;-)

there should be a log-file created, perhaps this will tell more about
what happened.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Astrid...

It would indeed be helpful ... unfortunately, it is quite a lot, and the
developers decided to show only static text which cannot be cut and
pasted... ;)

I found the log file ... since you probably are mostly interested in the
last part of it, I have left out things like base loading address of
Windows system DLLs, etc.:

VM Arguments:
jvm_args: -Xms40m -Xmx256m
java_command: F:\eclipse\startup.jar -os win32 -ws win32 -arch x86
-launcher F:\eclipse\eclipse.exe -name Eclipse -showsplash 600 -exitdata
298_48 -vm C:\WINNT\system32\javaw.exe -vmargs -Xms40m -Xmx256m -jar
F:\eclipse\startup.jar

vm_info:
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (1.4.2_09-b05) for windows-x86, built on Jul 25
2005 22:44:22 by "java_re" with MS VC++ 6.0

Thanks.

Dear Bob,

please have a look at your path variable, may be, your system does not
load sun java but that r***** win-VM. make sure the java path is is
first in path order.

OK, I put the Java path ahead of all other items in my PATH and still got
the same result (I think there is no other JVM on this machine, anyway,
but nevertheless...)

Here is the output of that dialog (copied manually :( ...):

// begin...
JVM terminated. Exit code=1
F:\j2sdk1.4.2_09\bin\javaw.exe
-Xms40m
-Xmx256m
-jar F:\eclipse\startup.jar
-os win32
-ws win32
-arch x86
-launcher F;\eclipse\eclipse.exe
-name Eclipse
-showsplash 600
-exitdata 2c8_48
-vm F:\j2sdk1.4.2_09\bin\javaw.exe
-vmargs
-Xms40m
-Xm256m
-jar F:\eclipse\startup.jar
// end...

My machine has 512 MB of physical RAM, so the -Xmx256m part should be OK.

Dear Bob,

I give in :-(

i found a lot of people discussing win2000 and eclipse in
news.eclipse.platform, perhaps you'll have luck finding s.o. more
competent than me there.

Kind regards
Astrid
