I am not sure the Mac is currently a supported platform. I was looking
through the web pages and it did not claim to support all platforms. I
tried to use the visual editor on a Mac and had no luck either. Currently I
can create the visual class but when I try to open the class via the visual
editor, I get a hang in the visual editor. I can try getting all of the
latest updates to the operating system to see see if that fixes anything
regarding this issue, but I am not sure it will.. It is possile that I dont
have the appropriate permissions for the sockets or there might be a policy
that needs to be enabled for java, but I havent spent too much time looking
into the issue.
Here is info regarding my Mac.

From what I know, the Mac OS X port is very much an alpha stage. The VE developers don't have access to Mac OS X systems to test on, so they're very much reliant on Mac people to help them out.
Also, there's a known issue with Apple's font rendering where fonts are not cached properly, which can cause all sorts of slow-downs on Mac OS X (both for Java and non-Java applications) that's rumoured to be fixed in 10.4.3. I'm not sure whether the same bug is visible in the 10.3.x builds (or even if there will be any further updates) but it might be the same thing.

Yup, OS X is not an officially supported platform for VE yet, but some
people have had success in Swing/AWT development with it. The execption
you're getting indicates that a network connection to localhost cannot
be made by java, so it's most likely a firewall problem.

What kind of tests / volunteer efforts would be needed in order to get Mac
to be a supported platform? I would be more than happy to help if I can. I
will also see how far I can get using Swing/AWT. All of my tests so far
have been on SWT Visual classes.
I played around with it and was able to get further past the socket
exception. The socket exception stopped occurring when I tried to open the
visual class in the edtor as root or when I patched to 10.4.2 from 10.4. It
was not a firewall problem from what I can tell. It definitely appeared to
me that there was something which required root access. I may try to
reproduce problem I was having at some point in the future by installing
eclipse in a separate location to see if problem reappears, booting off
partition or CD with original OS.
I was not sure what would be the best way to track the socket being opened
by a particular application so I dont have more detailed information to
give. I ran netstat before and during the opening of a file in visual
editor and from my tests, these appeared to be the ports eclipse was using
during the operation. So everything looked normal from that standpoint.
Active Internet connections (including servers)

And these were oen during the operation as well but are related to cups, so
I assume eclipse was not doing anything with these ports.
