Has anyone been able to get Eclipse M9 working with the latest CDT? [message #103299] Mon, 24 May 2004 21:32 Go to next message
Eclipse UserFriend
I've downloaded and installed the latest Eclipse M9 win32 build.

I then download the latest nightly build
(org.eclipse.cdt.sdk-I200405240300-win32.win32.x86.zip) and extract and
install it. When I try to create a new C or C++ managed make project, the
dialog does nothing.

I reinstall M9 and then tried updating using the update manager and
following the url with no luck. In fact there is no option to create a new
C or C++ project whatsoever.
http://update.eclipse.org/tools/cdt/updates/builds/2.0

This process really should be easy. I've looked all over the newsgroup and
it seems everyone is struggling here.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm having a simular problem.

I've downloaded the latest eclipse 3.0 M9 with no problems. When I use the
Help/Software Updates/Find and install... and use the update-URL
http://update.eclipse.org/tools/cdt/updates/builds/2.0M8 it also finds the
cdt-package.

But it give me the comment: requires plug-in "org.apache.xerces"

I've searched around for a solution for this problem. Any ideas?

perhaps this would help:

install eclipse 3.0M8

copy the org.apache.xerces_4.0.13 dir to another temp dir on your hard
drive, keeping the directory structure from the main eclipse directory.

e.g. C:\temp\eclipse\plugins\org.apache.xerces_4.0.13

then deinstall and install the eclipse 3.0M9

then goto software update and install the xerces plugin

g.t.

You know that daily/nightly builds are just coming from the HEAD-branch
and are not very well tested?

Perhaps, you should _read_ the download page of CDT.
Eclipse M9 just came out, there are API-changes, people download Eclipse
M9 and just yell on the project, that it doesn't work. But they still
are just not able to read a page, or think a bit, how long it would take
for someone to catch up on someone else's work.

The daily builds are stated clearly as "AS-IS", not tested. Its from
what has been in the HEAD-branch of CVS. If you want a stable
environment, take a stable build, though you might have to wait a
little, until its done.

Sorry, but this attitude of some here just make me sick.

Hey,

I just wanted to say that apart of the impatient here and there, there
are much more people who is just waiting patiently and comprehends the
complexity of this issues. Nobody can expect to have a perfect sync in
releases of the extensions to the platform and the platform itself.
That's why they are extensions. I think the CDT team is doing a great job.

Be careful. I have the very same problem with Eclipse M8 and CDT 2.0 M8

I looked at the latest nightly builds and chose the latest one which didnt
have any errors in the log. 20040517 was the one I chose. I downloaded
the zip file as the autoupdate complained about too many files open when I
tried to install it.

It works I think (havent tested to much) but remember this is bleeding
edge and so may or may not function as required.

All the best,

Tom

Ok I can see people are very apprehensive here. I have no intention of
pointing blame at anyone, and yes I am aware that things are not well-tested
as it IS bleeding-edge code. All I asked was if anyone was able to get M9
working with the latest (or recent) CDT? And believe me, I have _read_ the
download page for CDT at least a dozen times. A simple "yes and get XYZ
package" would have been sufficient. Obviously some people have a
combination of the two working for them, how about sharing that knowledge?
Isn't that what open-source communities are all about?

you can download the org.apache.xerces plugin from the eclipse CVS
repository (dev.eclipse.org:/home/eclipse)
You don't even have to compile it, it is already binary. You just need
to copy it to your plugins directory and hopefully that should work

Thanks for the input! I installed M9 with the nightly build from 20040517
and everything works (so far anyway). That was just the suggestion I
needed.

Well, to let you guys know, I'm running Eclipse 3.0 M9 with build
timestamp 200405211420.
Everything else up to day does not work on my setup here.

I pointed out below, which phrase made me get such opinions. See below.

These last two sentences just let me write the post below. You already
say, you used the daily builds. Sure it should be easy to install CDT by
Update Manager. But, it is an Daily Build, which doesn't mean even the
install will work. That's what I meant, people don't read here. The
stuff thats in the CVS HEAD at night will be used, though even the
crappiest piece of code a developer might save in the CVS.

Ok, i answered above, but to be more specific:

- have Eclipse 3.0M9 installed
- CVS checkoutet org.apache.xerces plugin as you told
- copied it to plugins/org.apache.xerces_4.0.13
- restarted Eclipse
- Plugin gets loaded (as per Help -> About Eclipse -> Plugin Details)
- but doesnt show up in Help -> Software Updates -> Manage
Configuration
- CDT M8 still fails to install because org.apache.xerces is not
present

This is under Debian Sarge and KDE. I do have Gnome and all the gtk
stuff installed.

Any hints?

CDT M8 will not work with Eclipse 3.0 M9. There were many changes to
Eclipse between M8 and M9, xerces was only one minor change.

If you cannot wait until CDT M9 is released, you can follow the instructions
in the FAQ or CDT download page to get the latest CDT nightly build. The
CDT development teams use Eclipse M9 to do development, so if you can
tolerate an untested raw build.... this is your chance to have CDT on
Eclipse M9 before CDT declares M9.
