I have installed Eclipse 3.1.1 Win 32, and BIRT 1.0.1
Doing a tutorial, I was able to create a new report using the sample
database, Classic Models, for my data source. I can preview the data set I
created, and can see the data in the report when I preview it.
I have set up two data sources to Oracle databases and get successful
connection when I click test connection. When I set up a data set for
either and try to open it, I get the error An unexpected internal
exception occurred. Please see log for detail. The log says

 Plug-in Provider:Eclipse.org
 Plug-in Name:BIRT Designer UI
 Plug-in ID rg.eclipse.birt.report.designer.ui
 Version:1.0.1
 Error Code:Error.GUIException.invokedByUnexpectedException
 Error Message:Caused by java.lang.NullPointerException

Ive tried to set up my paths correctly. Can anyone help? Thanks.

After some clue from Paul Reeves, i rechecked my extra 3rd party downloads
and notice that i misplaced the ApacheAxis' 6 files. It should be placed
 exactly in
 D:\eclipse\plugins\org.eclipse.birt.report.viewer_2.0.0\birt \WEB-INF\lib
And voila! it worked on the MySQL.

(I was trying MySQL thinking that will eliminate me that its just oracle and
not others, but MySQL had returned the same Http 500.)

So finally i tried back on Oracle (accessing Compiere DB) and it works like
 magic!

 Have a nice day Paul!
