This is because the Eclipse launcher is crap. It writes not only to the location that you've specified in -workspace, but it *also* tries to write to the configuration area in the Eclipse application install. Needless to say, this will fail.

It's supposed to automagically fail over to using some other area if the configuration area is read-only, but that may be failing becuase of network mounting of home directories, or because someone with Admin permissions has already created a configuration directory, so Eclipse thinks that it's OK to keep trying to write there.

The solution is to specify a configuration location in another place which you can do with the -configuration option (say, -configuration ~/workspace/.metadata/configuration).

You might also like to download Maclipse from SourceForge site, which is a rebundling of Eclipse to act both as a proper Mac application and also something that doesn't turd all over the application directory. The links are available at my blog post on the subject: http://alblue.blogspot.com/2006/04/eclipsemac-maclipse-and-m aclipse-lite.html

This mode is fully supported in eclipse but requires special setup
