Virgo 3.6.3 and Java 8 support [message #1603637] Fri, 06 February 2015 04:41 Go to next message

We are making use of Virgo version 3.6.3 in combination with Java 7. We would like to upgrade to Java 8. As far as I know Virgo does not support Java 8.

So, is it possible to upgrade our application to Java 8?

I think not. For instance, the Spring version that ships with Virgo, is incompatible with Java 8.

Don't know if this is sufficient, but you should at least have a look at the java6-server.profile file contained in the configuration folder.

There you should add Java 8 as an execution environment.

Then you should check the API level of the JDK 8 and update the java6-server.profile file to export JDK packages (javax.*) using the correct version. You may also need to get some updated specification bundles from a bundle repository (e.g. Eclipse Orbit) and upgrade the corresponding bundle shipped with Virgo and contained either in the plugins folder or in the repository/ext folder.

This is probably the minimum you have to do.
Good luck.

You might want to have a look at the JavaSE-1.8.profile[1] delivered with the current Equinox. Updating
the underlying Equinox[2] is currently on hold.

Sidenote:
The check, that Virgo is running on Java 1.6+[3], has been fixed on the 3.7 stream.
Maybe it's a good idea to cherry pick this change to get it into the forthcoming 3.6.4.RELEASE, too.

Hi,

what is the Timeline for Java8 Support in Virgo? We have a client installation and the client needs to migrate to Java 8. Without official Virgo support, we are stuck..

Following up, on your release page it says you are planning to stay with Spring 3.1.0:

https://wiki.eclipse.org/Virgo/Future

Spring only supports Java8 as a runtime environment from Spring 3.2.x, and Java8 for compilation Spring 4:

hxxp://spring.io/blog/2013/05/21/spring-framework-4-0-m1-3-2-3-available/

Does this mean there is no hope to ever run Virgo in Java 8?

According to the Virgo release plan, spring fmk will be updated to 4.X with Virgo Steel 3.7 . So I guess Virgo will be fully compliant with Java 1.8 with that version ? Do you have any release date in mind for Virgo Steel ?

Cheers,

Mathilde

@Jonas: Thanks for the pointer. I checked the Spring framework version used in Gemini Blueprint 2.0 and updated the versions for Virgo Steel 3.7 and later.

Thank you! Like Mathilde, I couldn't find any timeline for Virgo 3.7.x. Is there a release plan, do you have any idea when this might be ready?

No, unfortunately not.
As mentioned here there are plenty of possibilities to positively influence the release date.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or if you are interested in any of those options.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to influence the release date. We will continue to check on Virgo's progress Smile

Hi Florian, I sympathize with the resource issues you are facing, but as I am sure you understand many long time Virgo users will have give up on Virgo unless they can get a firm date for Java 8 support - which is really sad, because there is no equivalent today.

Is this something you have raised with the Eclipse Foundation at large, any chance of getting help from that direction?

Hello Florian,

I'll be happy to provide you some help - particularly on the gradle and Java 8 topic. But before I need some inputs from your current road map...

As far as I understood the current embedded Spring in Virgo is not java 8 compliant and so we need to upgrade it first before testing Virgo against Java 8 ? So I guess this is your priority task on the road to Virgo 3.7 ? Is there other blocking point like that to provide Java 8 on Virgo ?

Can you precise us some time line tasks to be achieved to see Virgo 3.7 one day and who is contributing already to these tasks ? I think that will help us to help you : this will show us how we can help efficiently depending our competencies and your current work in progress...

Cheers,

Mathilde
